Augusta broke strict protocol so Shane Lowry could buy luxury gift for Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy celebrated his Masters win over a few glasses of the finest wine thanks to close friend Shane Lowry.

McIlroy made history by completing a career Grand Slam by winning the elusive Masters last month, eleven years after scooping his last major.

And as expected Lowry was there to take it all in alongside his pal at Augusta and gave McIlroy a huge hug for his efforts.

At that point, the celebrations were just beginning but with Lowry close by, the party was always going to be turned up a notch.

Later in the evening, Lowry met with Augusta National’s sommelier – a wine and golf expert.

His plan was to find out what vintage bottles were in the wine cellar that sits beneath Augusta National’s clubhouse.

Some of the world’s finest wines are stored there with a 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild among the favourites among its members.

It is described as a legendary Bordeaux that, according to the auction house, Christie’s, is ‘characterized with intense blackcurrant flavors and aromas that develop into pencil lead, cedar and cigar box with age’.

Such is its splendour, Jack Nicklaus was handed cases of the 1947 and ‘52 Château Lafite, only to later store them in wine coolers at his Florida home which subsequently spoiled the taste.

“Expensive lesson,” he said after his error of judgement. “I ended up with high-priced vinegar.”

But there was no such mistake from Lowry who wanted to toast his friend’s historic victory with something special.

And the Irishman got the famously strict Augusta National to relax protocol for such a special occasion,

After asking if he could purchase a case or two, the sommelier replied: “Mr Lowry, we don’t allow people to take wine out of the club,” as recited by McIlroy before the PGA Championship.

But Lowry’s persistence eventually paid off and he was afforded the chance to buy one case of 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild.

“So that’s what we had that night to celebrate, “ McIlory added. “That was a very nice gift.

“He bought it, and he brought it to my rental house that night and we had a few glasses.”

For context, a bottle of the vintage wine starts at a whopping $1,000 online rising up to $3,000 or even $4,000…and that’s if you can find one.

“Prices are always all over the map because they don’t have exclusive importers like most wines,” said Paul Einbund, a sommelier and winemaker told Golf.com

“They are so famous and sought after that they can say no to exclusives.”

However, saying no to Lowry appeared to be a different challenge entirely.
