Your short guide to today’s top stories – and why they matter

Here is your quick guide to today’s top stories – and why they matter.

President Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – the first foreign leader to meet in person with Trump at the White House since he was inaugurated.

Why it matters: Netanyahu faces pressure from his right-wing coalition to end a temporary truce with Hamas and from war-weary Israelis who want the remaining hostages home and the 15-month conflict to end.

    China retaliates

China will implement counter tariffs against the US on a range of products in response to Donald Trump’s 10 per cent tariff on its goods, which came into effect on Tuesday.

Why it matters: During his first term in 2018, Trump initiated a brutal two-year trade war with China over its massive US trade surplus, with tit-for-tat tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods upending global supply chains and damaging the world economy.

An international panel of experts in the care of newborn babies will present what they say is “significant new medical evidence” in the case of convicted child serial killer Lucy Letby.

Why it matters: Letby’s legal team has said it would make a fresh bid to challenge her convictions – but the only legal avenue would be to convince the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) to apply for her case to be heard once again by the Court of Appeal.

    Another school stabbing

Police are continuing to question a teenager after 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose died in a stabbing attack at a Sheffield school on Monday.

Why it matters: Anti-knife crime campaigners say stabbings among young people is a symptom of wider problems, including mental health, poverty and grooming by criminal gangs.

Families of the victims of Nottingham killer Valdo Calocane have urged NHS England to rethink a decision not to publish a report into the care he received in full.

Why it matters: A summary of the independent mental health homicide report is due to be made publicly available later this week, but the full version will be kept confidential due to “data protection legislation relating to patient information”.
