RTD bus and train rides free Tuesday to honor civil rights leader Rosa Parks

Metro Denver residents can ride Regional Transportation District buses and trains for free on Tuesday, Transit Equity Day, to honor civil rights leader Rosa Parks.

RTD CEO and General Manager Debra Johnson announced the zero-fare day in Denver’s City Park Monday, standing by the statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Another statue commemorates Rosa Parks, who in 1955 refused to give up her seat and move to the back of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, spurring the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott, led by King and others. Parks was born on Feb. 4, 1913.

Federal transportation officials in 2021 established Transit Equity Day to promote public transportation as a civil right essential for social inclusion and connecting people to work, health care, and school. More than a dozen public transit around the country participate.
