Trolley car still inside, demolition looms for former Spaghetti Warehouse building

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The former Spaghetti Warehouse, a building that holds many memories of Columbus diners, will meet a wrecking ball or bulldozer within the next few weeks, and it appears the restored trolley car that stood as its centerpiece will be going down with it.

Megan Seitz, a woman who lives in an apartment near the former Spaghetti Warehouse, located at 397 W. Broad St. in Franklinton, has noticed a lot of activity around the three-story brick edifice and shared her observations on social media. Seitz posted two photos of large equipment in the building's parking lot with the caption “Spaghetti Warehouse demo day coming soon?”

In an email to NBC4, Seitz offered more details about what she noticed at the site.

“I have a great vantage point from my apartment!” wrote Seitz. “For months, every now and then I noticed people walking around the lot taking photos. … The big cranes were there last week and this week, but they are actually gone today.”

The trolley car was offered to the Columbus Historical Society, but board of trustees member Bob Hunter said in a social media post that removing it from the building would be "an expensive and nearly impossible task." Hunter said he was one of four historical society members invited inside to see the trolley car last week and described it as large enough to hold about 40 people.

The trolley car was one of the many odd yet familiar aspects that came along with a meal at the Spaghetti Warehouse, including antiques such as a Prohibition-era copper still, metal advertising signs for soft drinks, and church pews. Some of these items were auctioned off in 2023. The location had closed the previous year after part of its roof collapsed.

Commenters on Reddit were quick to respond to Seitz with poignant recollections.

“Hate to see it go, but change is inevitable. Had many enjoyable post-Christmas shopping dinners with mom & dad and brothers. ☹️” said one person.

“Sad times,” shared another Redditor. “We had my great-grandparents 50th anniversary dinner there when I was a young child, I took my in-laws there when they came in from out of state and it was the last place I went out to dinner with my family for my birthday before the roof collapsed.”

Previously, NBC4 reported that the property is owned by Robert Weiler of the Robert Weiler Company, Pat Kelley of Kelley Companies and Spaghetti Warehouse owner Doug Pak, the trio plan to redevelop the site. The development group, known as 397 West Broad LLC, explained in a September 2024 letter to the Columbus Development Commission why the structure must come down. A video about the plans is available in the player above.

“As the current owners of 397 W. Broad St., we would much prefer to save and restore the former Spaghetti Warehouse building and would do so if it was economically feasible,” the letter read. “Safety is the reason why we are demolishing this building.”

A representative from the Robert Weiler Company confirmed to NBC4 that demolition is planned “in the next 60 days.”

The Spaghetti Warehouse has since opened a new location in Downtown Columbus.
