To the Editor:
Dear Community Partners,
Mendocino County continues to make progress on the development of its Drought Resilience Plan (DRP) to enhance our community’s preparedness for future water shortages. This effort, initiated in response to the severe 2020-2022 drought and in compliance with Senate Bill 552, is being led by the Mendocino County Water Agency in collaboration with the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) and EKI Environment and Water, Inc. The DRP will assess the potential risks of future droughts and outline both short-term and long-term strategies to manage water scarcity. Public participation remains crucial to the success of this initiative.
In September, we held two foundational meetings—a County Drought Task Force (CDTF) meeting under the General Government Standing Committee (GGC) and the first public workshop hosted by UCCE. These meetings introduced the planning effort focused on SB-552 requirements and drought risk assessment, provided an overview of the DRP development process, and gathered valuable input from the community. We are pleased to announce two upcoming meetings that will build on the progress made during those initial sessions:
County Drought Task Force Meeting Under GGC
This meeting will provide updates on the DRP development process and discuss proposed short-term and long-term strategies. We encourage all water stakeholders, domestic well owners, and State Small Water System operators to attend and provide their feedback and share information to be considered in the development of the DRP.
-Date: Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025
-Time: 9 a.m. to noon
-Location: General Government Standing Committee (GGC) Meeting, Mendocino County Administrative Center, Board of Supervisors Chambers
-Agenda and remote participation link will be available on mendocino.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx
Second Public Workshop on the Drought Resilience Plan
Led by UCCE, this workshop will focus on sharing DRP’s proposed strategies for drought preparedness and its implementation plan with domestic well owners and State Small Water Systems, as well as outlining the schedule for the public release of the draft DRP and its commenting process. Your input will be essential as we finalize the plan.
Date: Friday, Feb. 21, 2025 Time: 3 – 4:30 p.m.
In Person attendance: Fort Bragg Veterans Memorial Building (360 N Harrison St, Fort Bragg, CA)
Online attendance: Zoom
RSVP Link: surveys.ucanr.edu/survey.cfm?surveynumber=45415
Both meetings represent an opportunity for stakeholders and the public to engage with the DRP process and provide feedback on the proposed strategies and implementation plans. Your participation is invaluable as we work together to ensure a resilient future for Mendocino County.
