The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of running back Roschon Johnson.
Roschon Johnson’s 2024 Snapshot
Like many, Roschon Johnson saw his role in Chicago’s offense reduced under Shane Waldron during the 2024 season. As a rookie in 2023, Johnson carried the football 81 times for 352 yards. He also saw 40 targets as a receiver out of the backfield, which amounted to 34 catches and 209 receiving yards. In 2024, Johnson saw his rushing attempts shrink to 55 and his receiving targets down 50 percent to 20.
When Waldron was fired, and Thomas Brown took over as the offensive play-caller, Johsnon saw a more defined role, where he became the primary short-yardage and goal-line running back. That shift helped Johnson score a pair of touchdowns in Brown’s first two games at the helm, but it resulted in even less work than when Waldron was in charge. However, that might have been due to a concussion. After appearing on 42 percent of snaps in Week 11 and 38 percent in Week 12, Johnson saw snap shares of 27 percent (Week 16), 33 percent (Week 17), and 21 percent (Week 18).

Considering D’Andre Swift’s inefficiency for much of the season, this was one of the more puzzling personnel decisions made by the Bears that needs to change in 2025.

Johnson is heading into the third year of his rookie deal in 2025. He’s scheduled to make $1.03 million in base salary and $192,172 in signing bonuses. Johnson is also under contract in 2025, where he is scheduled to make $1.14 million in the final year of his rookie deal.

I’ve been pounding the table for the Bears to use Roschon Johnson more for two years, and even when it seems like they’re coming around to the idea, it doesn’t last long. During his two seasons in Chicago, Johnson has worked with three offensive coordinators (Luke Getsy, Shane Waldron, and Thomas Brown). I’m hoping that his fourth offensive play-caller, Ben Johnson, sees more in Roschon than the previous three did.
I discussed this in D’Andre Swift’s 2024 review, and I can see a scenario in which Johnson plays the Jamaal Williams role and D’Andre Swift plays a role he’s familiar with from his time in Detroit under Johnson in 2022. Regardless of how it looks, Johnson has had success with utilizing efficient backfield platoons in each of his three seasons as the offensive coordinator in Detroit, and I really hope he can find that balance in Chicago next season.
