A PROMINENT healthcare chain is removing its locations within select Walgreens locations soon.
Consumers who went to the stores to receive medical services will need to make adjustments through the new transition.
Advocate Health Care confirmed that 47 of its urgent care clinics operating within Walgreens locations in Illinois are those being removed, per Chicago NBC affiliate WMAQ.
The official closure date for the affected clinics is February 6, 2025.
“We are partnering closely with Walgreens to navigate this transition and will support employees by working to find them alternative roles within our organization that best align with their skills and preferences,” Advocate Health Care told WMAQ in a statement.
The company noted that one to two medical office assistants and several “additional clinicians who support virtual care operations” work in the 47 Walgreens-based clinics.
Appointments are offered for checkups on relatively minor illnesses, including sore throats, coughs, colds, and flu-like symptoms, per the Advocate Health Care website.
There are also screenings for other health conditions also commonly seen at all urgent cares.
Patients were offered an “in-person experience with video technology” at the Walgreens locations.
Advocate Health Care seeks to place some of the urgent care locations within other areas and also put attention on virtual care.
“This allows us to focus on additional ways patients prefer to access care, when and where they need it, including expanded virtual services that provide care within the comfort of their own home, as well as convenient access to urgent care and primary care locations in the community,” Advocate Health Care noted.
The company also confirmed a significant “investment” into the South Side of Chicago, opening several Neighborhood Care locations within local community centers and churches.
PROGRAM UNDERWAY
Walgreens currently operates about 8,500 locations nationwide but has initiated a $1 billion cost-cutting program that will see 1,200 stores close over three years.
Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, confirmed the initiative in October, which will also include the firings of several mid-level executives.
“We recognize where we are is a turnaround,” Wentworth said in an earnings call last year.
“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term.”

500 closures are planned for 2025 alone, and at least 70 Walgreens stores were already shuttered by the end of last year.
MORE COMING
At least 23 stores already have confirmed shutdown dates in February and March.
California accounts for 12 of those, and Wentworth said the pace of the closures should “significantly ramp up” as the year continues, per USA Today.
The CEO also emphasized that the remaining stores left open after the mass shutdowns would be stronger for it.
“When you look at our stores, the stores that were not on the closure list, we see those stores being materially stronger, still not where they need to be, but materially stronger than the stores that we’re closing,” Wentworth said.
Walgreens was also in buyout talks with a private equity firm recently.
A controversial policy at the drugstore chain also recently backfired for shoppers.
