Another day, another twist in the Jimmy Butler saga on South Beach.
Earlier today, Shams Charania reported that Butler was suspended indefinitely by the Heat. Charania revealed that Butler walked out of the Heat shootaround this morning after being informed that the team wasn’t going to be starting him going forward.
This update is only the latest in a long line of drama surrounding Butler and the Miami Heat this season, and it appears to be the final step before an eventual parting of ways prior to the February 6th trade deadline.

It feels like we’ve been building toward this moment for quite some time. After the Heat were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the playoffs last year, Jimmy Butler took to social media and essentially said that things would have been different if he were healthy. Butler was hurt in the Play-In tournament last year, and while the Heat won the right to take on the Celtics in the first round of the postseason, Boston made quick work of them.
After Butler took to social media and made those remarks, Pat Riley lashed out at Butler in the media essentially saying if you’re not going to play, don’t talk, and he didn’t dismiss the possibility of moving him. Clearly, he didn’t move Butler at that time, but it kind of set the stage for a tumultuous 2024-25. Butler can opt out of his deal in the offseason and wants one last big contract.
© Jim Rassol-Imagn ImagesWhile the Heat had no intention of extending Butler, Pat Riley did originally say that Miami also had no plans to move the veteran forward and intended on pushing for a playoff spot. Jimmy, on the other hand, didn’t really seem all that interested in that approach, and thus drama ensued.
Now with less than two weeks left until the NBA Trade Deadline on February 6th, Butler has been suspended for the third time this season by Miami. While clearly it’s in the best interest of both parties to move Butler elsewhere, it really isn’t quite that simple. The Suns are the top suitor and preferred landing spot for Butler, but they need to find someone to take on Bradley Beal. Milwaukee is seemingly interested as well, but they’ll also have to make the money work.
One can assume with this third suspension, Miami feels that much more inclined to get a deal done prior to February 6th, but there is still some work to be done to get them there. If they are unable to get a deal done, would Butler still play for Miami the rest of the way? Would the Heat even want him to? This breakup has gotten incredibly messy in a short amount of time over the last two months, but hopefully, we get a resolution before February 6.
