Strike 3: Ridiculously early look at the Denver Broncos schedule

Strike 3: Let’s get ridiculous.

It’s May. The ink isn’t dry on NFL rookie and free agent contracts. Rookies are still looking for places to live, and we don’t even know if or where Aaron Rodgers is going to play next fall.

Training camp is two months away and most of the veterans, holdovers and newcomers alike, are on vacation.

But the new schedules are officially out, so what they hey, why not gaze into the slightly cracked crystal ball and predict the Denver Broncos win/loss record for a season (and a lot of key injuries) that’s still three months away?

    Ridiculous, right?

    Here goes.

Fresh off their first playoff appearance in almost a decade, the Broncos are one of those teams looking to make some noise in the very challenging AFC Western Division. Perennial power Kansas City is still perched at the top, with both the LA Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders looking to improve as well. There is no easy road to the postseason.

For the Broncos, that road begins with a home game on Sept. 7 against the Tennessee Titans and their new quarterback, Cam Ward. Denver’s defense will be a tough unit for veteran QB’s to crack. The Broncos start out 1-0.

Then there’s a road game at Indianapolis and the middling Colts. Riding some momentum, the Broncos should get to 2-0.

This is uncharted territory for Denver in recent years. Can they keep it up?

Week 3 has Denver heading to LA to play their first division game against Jim Harbaugh’s bunch of bullies. This wasn’t a good match up physically for the Broncos last season, and until we see a change, we can’t predict a change. A loss to LA makes the Broncos 2-1.

They get a chance to bounce back on Monday Night Football when they host the high-powered Cincinnati Bengals. The two teams played a back and forth affair in 2024. Why should we not expect more of the same? This time, the home cookin’ favors the Broncos. They win to go to 3-1.

Things get a little nasty after that. The Broncos are a team on the upswing. The Philadelphia Eagles are already at the top of the mountain. A trip to Philly on a short week doesn’t turn out too well. The Broncos will fall to 3-2.

From there, it’s a much anticipated jaunt across the pond, where Denver will face the dysfunctional New York Jets. All things being equal in terms of travel, etc (it’s fair to expect Sean Payton to have his team go directly from Philadelphia to London, right?) the Broncos are the better team and should cap their trip to merry old England with another W to get to 4-2.

Why no bye week after the London trip? Seems odd and kinda unfair, right? But the next opponent, the other New York team, the Giants, is favorable. Expect an ugly game that the Broncos pull out at home to move to 5-2.

If there’s going to be any hangover from the long trip, it might show up even more the following week when the Broncos host the Dallas Cowboys. In an upset, the Jones clan comes to Colorado and with Deion Sanders on the Cowboys sidelines, upsets Denver to send the Broncos to their third defeat.

After the disappointment against Dallas, the Broncos head to Texas to battle the Houston Texans. Another tough venue to play in against a quality QB and his young team. Too much. Broncos fall to 5-4.

Who better to right the ship against than the hated Raiders at home? Vegas may be improved under Pete Carroll, but not enough yet. Broncos dump Vegas to get to 6-4.

Now on a bit of a high, it’s time to take on the big dog. Unlike the year before, Patrick Mahomes WILL play in Denver, but the Broncos will still beat the defending AFC Champs to get to 7-4.

After that, it’s another trip to the east coast, this time to the nation’s capital where Jayden Daniels and the Commanders pose another roadblock. After the high of the Chiefs win, the Broncos won’t have enough to beat DC. Record falls to 7-5.

The disappointment will be short lived, however. Nothing like another match with the Raiders to get the juices flowing. The Broncos will travel to Las Vegas and come home winners once again, moving to 8-5.

Who knows what the Green Bay Packers will bring to town, except a lot of fans wearing chunks of cheese on their heads. This could prove to be a very difficult game for the Broncos, coming off an emotional win in Vegas. Another upset, this time the Pack escapes Denver with a win. Broncos move to 8-6.

The following week, assuming he’s still upright and healthy after trying to play on both sides of the ball, Travis Hunter and the Jacksonville Jaguars come to Mile High. They leave with an L. Denver wins its 9th game to get to 9-6.

Earning another playoff spot will very likely depend on gaining at least a split of the last two games. First is a trip to KC where the “not dead yet” Chiefs await. The game will matter for both teams, and the Chiefs are still better. Denver drops to 9-7.

So in order to make the playoffs once again, the Broncos have to muscle up and take down the bully in powder blue. With the game at Mile High, and still smarting from two losses to LA last season, the Broncos get it done at home and beat the Chargers to finish 10-7. Again.

    Ridiculous, right?
