ROD LAVER ARENA — Madison Keys became the oldest first-time Australian Open champion in the Open era when she shocked Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Keys, 29, first reached the semi-finals in Melbourne as a 19-year-old, and the final of the US Open at 21, but had never previously able to deliver the grand slam glory she promised as a teenage phenom.
Sabalenka was chasing another slice of history, hoping to become the fifth woman to win three Australian Open titles in a row, but her 20-match unbeaten streak came crashing down in a flurry of double-faults unforced errors.
The Belarusian remains atop the rankings courtesy of Iga Swiatek losing in the semi-finals, but by losing to Keys, ranked 14, she becomes is only the third women’s world No 1 to lose a major final to a player from outside the top 10.
