A Ukiah man was arrested recently for allegedly carrying a stolen firearm and methamphetamine while on probation, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the MCSO, deputies were on Brush Street in Ukiah around 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 “conducting a civil service in the 300 Block of Brush Street” when they heard “loud banging” in the area and went to investigate.
The deputies then reported locating a man working on an electric scooter whom they recognized as Rafael V. Paz Jr., a 47-year-old Willits resident who was on probation and had an active felony warrant for his arrest.
When the deputies contacted Paz and attempted to detain him, he reportedly “attempted to flee through a residence entry door, approximately eight feet behind him. Deputies stopped Paz as he opened the door to the residence and pulled him out of the threshold of the doorway. Paz resisted the deputies’ attempts to restrain him … and was able to remove a firearm from his front waistline and give the weapon to a subject inside the residence. Shortly after removing the firearm from his possession, Paz was taken into custody.”
Deputies reported recovering the firearm and determining that it had been reported stolen. They also reported that upon searching Paz, they located “a magazine for the firearm and approximately half a gram of suspected methamphetamine. In accordance with California Proposition 36, Paz’s possession of the methamphetamine was a felony violation (and he) was determined to be prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to previous criminal convictions.”
Paz was then arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm, violating his probation, possessing a hard drug with two prior drug-related convictions, being armed during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed stolen firearm, resisting, and for the felony “No Bail” arrest warrant. He was booked into Mendocino County Jail and held without bail.
