Jacksonville Jaguars make final head coach decision in dramatic last-minute u-turn from NFL rival

THE Jacksonville Jaguars are caught up in one of the most dramatic coaching cycles in recent memory.

After seemingly letting their top coaching candidate walk away, the Jaguars appear to have made a U-turn and hired Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

Coen had a deal on the table from the Buccaneers to become one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the NFL.

However, it seems that he never put pen to paper on that deal.

“We call that a plot twist, a massive plot twist for the Jacksonville Jaguars for their head coaching search,” NFL Network insider Rapoport said.

When it came time to sign that deal, the Buccaneers couldn’t get into contact with Coen.

“As one person said about the two-day saga that saw the Jaguars lose their GM, the Buccaneers lose their OC and Coen accept two jobs – one that made him the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator, and another to become Jacksonville’s HC: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it in my life,'” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said.

It’s hard to shock the entire NFL world with a move, but Coen somehow pulled it off with this one.

Originally, Coen walked away from the Jaguars deal on his own to return to the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers then rewarded him with a massive contract that Rapoport said was “done, it was agreed to, everything was fine.”

    Clearly everything was not fine.

“And then he kind of disappeared,” Rapoport said.

Later that day, the Jaguars fired general manager Trent Baalke, who was one of the reasons Coen walked away.

The Jaguars reached back out to Coen after firing Baalke, and he met with owner Shad Khan on Thursday, according to ESPN.

While all this was happening, the Buccaneers were seemingly panicking as they couldn’t get into contact with their offensive coordinator.

Coen told Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles of his change of heart on Thursday night but did not reach out to anyone else.

“Really went dark on them for the last 24 hours as they tried to get answers, he tried to get answers as well but for a different situation,” Rapoport said.

“They were trying to figure out what was going on with Liam Coen, why hadn’t he signed his extension, he actually was heading down to Jacksonville… where he is in the building right now talking to them about their head coaching job.”

Those talks ultimately culminated in Coen signing with the Jaguars as their next head coach.

He takes over from Doug Pederson, who made the playoffs once with quarterback Trevor Lawrence before the franchise slid downhill.

“So much of this is about Trevor Lawrence and making sure the quarterback position is right,” Rapaport said.

“Liam Coen did an excellent job as an offensive coordinator for the Bucs, that has been no debate.

“But how he got there? Certainly, I would say, is a little bit spicy.”

The Jaguars still need a general manager, but it is possible that Coen will have a say in that search.
