MIKE Greenberg has claimed that Patrick Mahomes is “playing to become the Michael Jordan” of the modern era of the NFL this weekend.
Greenberg, 57, piled the pressure on Mahomes’ opposite number Josh Allen ahead of Sunday’s AFC Championship game between Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.
Mahomes and Allen will go head to head in the play-offs for the fourth time this weekend with the Chiefs superstar hoping to extend his perfect post-season record against Allen.
Mahomes, who is looking to lead the Chiefs to his third consecutive Super Bowl, has had the beating of Allen when it comes to post-season matchups over the years – winning all three of their meetings.
While Allen, who is the bookies’ favourite to win the league MVP this year, has had the beating of Mahomes in regular season meetings, boasting a 4-1 record over the Kansas thrower.
But ESPN’s Greenberg reckons that you can’t call the pair rivals until Josh Allen has earned his stripes by beating Mahomes when it really matters.
Doubling down on his assessment of the two quarterbacks by claiming that Mahomes will be the Michael Jordan of of his generation if he can with a third consecutive Super Bowl the same way MJ won three NBA Championships in 1991, 1992 and 1993.
Speaking on Get Up, Greenberg said: “Let’s be very specific. Patrick Mahomes is playing to become the Michael Jordan of this era.
“When did Michael Jordan become Micheal Jordan? When he three-peated.
“That was something that Larry [Bird] hadn’t done, Magic [Johnson] hadn’t done and no-one had done going back to the Celtics of the 60s.
“Jordan became Jordan because he had no rival. It’s not a rivalry, it’s a relationship until both sides have won.
“So right now, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have a relationship until he [Allen] beats him [Mahomes] it is not a rivalry.
“And I agree, he has to not just beat him, but he has to win a Championship for us to start putting him in that conversation”.
Mahomes and the Chiefs would become the first franchise in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls if they were to do it this year.
However, they face a Bills team in top form with Allen pulling the strings better than he ever has before.
Three-time Pro Bowler Keyshawn Johnson isn’t so sure that Allen’s form is relevant and thinks that the Bills superstar will fall short once again on Sunday.
Speaking on Fox Sports’ show, ‘Speak’, he said: “I understand that you’ve beaten them in the regular season. I understand all that.
“That’s great. But you’ve yet to do anything come postseason time…
“Guess what my narrative is? He can’t beat Kansas City! He cannot beat Kansas City!
“All we’re talking about right now is the playoffs. That’s it. I don’t care what you did in the regular season.
“You can’t beat them in the playoffs. Whatever changes, I don’t know if all of a sudden you get tight.
“You start sweating in the middle of the night and you don’t get no sleep in the hotel. I don’t know what it is!”
