‘Costco has made a major mistake’ fumes members after chain officially axes popular section in all locations

COSTCO members are fuming after the chain made a “major mistake” by axing a popular section from all its branches.

Customers are upset because executives have decided to remove the huge book section from the store floor all year round.

One member raged on social media: “Costco has made a major mistake by removing the book section in its stores.”

She added: “It was a meeting place for adults and children, inspiring too.

“Not cost effective they said. Well, neither is their chicken!”

Another reported that books had been slowly disappearing from the chain before they vanished altogether.

She said: “Our Costco has been slowly getting rid of the book section over the years.”

The retail giant announced its plan to stop stocking books in the US back in June.

It has been in a long-running sales battle with Amazon since the online store began selling book in 1995, but decided last year to throw in the towel.

The members-only chain will now only sell books during the holiday period from the fall through to December.

Books may be sold throughout the rest of the year, but not consistently.

Bosses claimed the departure from books is due to the cost of staffing required to stock them.

The book section required more labor time than others because new books are laid out every Tuesday as new releases enter the stores.

Unsold copies also had to be returned to publishing houses – driving up the costs.

The change will be a blow to publishers as well as book-lovers, because Costo would often order tens of thousands of copies of any book it was stocking.

For a major bestseller, the company could stock hundreds of thousands per title.

Brenna Connor, the director of US books at Circana, told the New York Times: “It’s an easy place to just grab the latest in a series you’re reading or pick up a book for your kid.”

She added: “They are important for the book market overall.”

Robert Gottlieb, chair of Trident Media Group, told the Times: “Costco across the country was a big outlet for books.

“There are now fewer and fewer places to buy books in a retail environment.”

Another Costco member sparked a lively debate after suggesting a change that could make the warehouse giant’s shopping experience more convenient.

The idea, which involves adding stick-on handles for heavier items, came from a Reddit user who said it would be a “game changer,” especially for urban shoppers relying on public transit.

The shopper wrote: “I live in a major city and take public transit to go to Costco. If they had these little stick-on handles like Target does, it would be a game changer.”

They explained that having handles would make carrying heavier or bulkier items far easier, even influencing what they choose to purchase.
