An uptick in Santa Ana winds Wednesday afternoon through Thursday, combined with critically dry vegetation and low humidity, will result in elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions in San Diego County through late Thursday.

The powerful Santa Ana winds, which have been driving warm and dry weather, are expected to weaken by Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

This will bring some relief to the region after days of gusty conditions that have raised concerns over fire danger and air quality, forecasters said.

High temperatures Wednesday are expected to reach 67 to 72 near the coast, 74 to 77 inland, 75 to 80 in the western valleys, 61 to 71 in the mountains and around 72 in the deserts.

A cold upper-level storm system is anticipated to sweep into the area this weekend. The system is expected to bring showers and drop snow levels beginning late Saturday and continuing through Sunday night.

The storm could bring much-needed moisture to parched landscapes, offering a reprieve from the prolonged dryness caused by the offshore winds, the NWS said.
