Ben Johnson is a Believer in Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears have yet to make the Ben Johnson news officially official. However, his agency sent out a tweet that pretty much seals the deal as far as I’m concerned. And now, there is some new video (h/t Windy City Gridiron) of Johnson arriving at Halas Hall. It truly doesn’t get much more official than this, does it?

In any case, whenever the Bears *DO* make it officially official on their end, then I will fully allow myself to dream about what quarterback Caleb Williams will do in Johnson’s offense.

Let’s make no mistake about it. QB1 was the draw here with the Bears. We can discuss the team’s cap space, collection of draft picks, the potential of a new stadium on the horizon, and other factors that played a role in Ben Johnson ultimately choosing Chicago. But the reality is that the opportunity to coach quarterback Caleb Williams entering his second year as a pro was what ultimately lured Johnson to the Windy City.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport confirms it in this video:

Words from Rap Sheet, who explains why Ben Johnson chose the Bears over the Las Vegas Raiders (and other possible suitors):

It was pretty clear he had his choice of which team to pick and he picked the Bears. And a lot of the reason the Bears were an attractive selection for him and an attractive team for him revolved around Caleb Williams. It’s much easier to win games, as we saw in the playoffs, if you have a top-flight quarterback. Clearly, Ben Johnson taking this job in Chicago means he believes that Caleb Williams can be like those other guys. Can be like the Patrick Mahomes of the world, the Josh Allens of the world. Certainly, the pedigree is there. But it is on Ben Johnson to get him there.

Two major takeaways from what Rapoport said about Ben Johnson taking this job. Firstly, it’s that the Bears new head coach is a true believer in his quarterback’s talents and upside — and why wouldn’t you? Can you blame him? Let’s not forget that Caleb Williams entered last year’s NFL Draft as the consensus No. 1 pick. There is a unique prospect pedigree that Williams has and that his new coach seemingly is looking forward to tapping into upon arrival. The other notable thing for me is that Johnson is definitely feeling himself. This is a coach who has confidence in himself to take Williams to another level. And, again, why wouldn’t he feel this way?

We saw Jared Goff go from being treated as a throw-in as part of the Matthew Stafford trade to being a Pro Bowl quarterback racking up 4,000-yard seasons in Johnson’s offense. I’d be confident, too, if I were to pull that off.

Duh! Of course Ben Johnson wanted to coach Caleb Williams

Back in December, Patrick picked up on something Ben Johnson said while he was the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator when he was asked about Caleb Williams:

“I haven’t really dove in, and can’t tell you much more beyond that, but he’s been impressive from afar.”

Evidently, Ben liked what he saw from afar. Because, now, he gets to get up close and personal with Chicago’s QB1. Frankly, this is the reason I wanted Johnson to be the Bears’ next head coach in the first place. Don’t get it twisted. The trick plays and gadgetry are fun. But the real win in hiring Ben Johnson is having an offensive-leaning head coach who just coached Jared Goff to Pro Bowl-caliber seasons who will get their hands on the Bears’ signal caller and mold him into something better than what he is now. It’s always been easy to dream about Caleb’s future. But it is easier when his new coach has a recent history of developing a quarterback.

We’ll get to dive into more Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams stuff in due time. I imagine there is a lot to dissect when it comes to their future relationship. But in the meantime, we get to dream big now that the Bears are pairing the top quarterback from last year’s draft class with the hottest coaching candidate from this hiring cycle.
