Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are fighting for their lives in the title game against Ohio State.
It hasn’t been a pretty game for the Irish, and Freeman has been getting plenty of criticism on social media. For example, in the 3rd quarter, the team fell behind 28-7 and was faced with a 4th-and-2 from its own 33-yard line. Instead of keeping the offense on the field, Freeman attempted a fake punt which failed.
Then, the coach received additional criticism when he opted to attempt a 27-yard field goal while down 16 points in the 4th quarter. The FG attempt was missed, and the Irish came away with no points.
Let’s take a look at some of the best tweets about Freeman’s decision-making.

— JBen (@JMB_CU16) January 21, 2025Marcus Freeman using a timeout there is far worse game management than kicking that FG btw

— Matt Hayes (@MattHayesCFB) January 21, 2025Marcus freeman really messed up by not going for it when they were in the red zone
— Chris Bethea (@CA_Bethea) January 21, 2025That FG attempt makes even less sense now Marcus Freeman??♂️
— Coach Dax (@iamcoachjohnson) January 21, 2025Deciding to kick that FG will haunt Marcus Freeman for a longgggg time. Shoutout to the Irish players for not rolling over when this thing was getting out of hand.
— SubZero Sports (@subzero_sports) January 21, 2025Marcus Freeman has made some questionable decisions tonight, but Notre Dane still has life. We got a game.
— Parker Kelley (@parker_kelley10) January 21, 2025Luckily, Freeman’s FG decision didn’t end up hurting the Irish. Freeman’s defense made a quick stop of the Buckeyes and got the ball back. Once the Irish offense had the ball, the team went on a 6-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a TD. The Irish then successfully went for 2 and made it a 1-possession game.
However, if the Irish end up losing this game, it will be impossible to not think about the questionable calls. How would the game have been different if the team converted the failed fake punt or scored instead of missing a FG?
With just over 1 minute to go, the Irish are down 31-23 in Atlanta.
