Santa Ana winds increased Monday morning, prompting San Diego Gas & Electric to began a new set of Public Safety Power Shutoffs across the county, affecting hundreds of customers with the potential to reach over 80,000 more.
The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning until 10 p.m. Tuesday for San Diego County’s inland valleys and mountainous areas as Santa Ana winds pick back up.
“Widespread wind gusts of 35-55 mph will occur across the coastal slopes of the mountains and into the adjacent valleys, with local gusts over 80 mph in the favored passes, canyons, and coastal slopes,” the San Diego NWS said.
The winds are coming alongside extremely dry conditions forecast Tuesday, with a minimum humidity of 4 to 7% in the afternoon, causing concern for fire conditions.
While the red flag warning is in effect until Tuesday evening, winds are expected to strengthen on Thursday, possibly causing a moderate Santa Ana event to occur.
SDG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs Map Jan. 20, 2025 (Courtesy of SDG&E)In order to prevent wildfire risk, SDG&E is enacting shutoffs in Boulevard, Campo Reservation, Descanso, and Warner Springs, additionally warning over 82,000 customers of their potential to encounter a PSPS, through 5 p.m. on Friday.
SDG&E will continue to have Community Resource Centers, equipped with Wi-Fi and device charging available for customers affected by a PSPS.
