ESPN analyst sees Tom Allen bringing a huge impact to Clemson

ESPN’s Sam Acho believes Tom Allen could bring a transformative spark to Clemson as the team’s new defensive coordinator.

“It’s going to be a huge impact,” Acho said, addressing Clemson’s defensive shortcomings during the 2024 season.

Clemson struggled to stop the run down the stretch, allowing massive rushing performances, including 288 yards to The Citadel and 292 yards to Texas in their College Football Playoff loss.

“I called Clemson’s game against South Carolina,” Acho shared. “They lost because their defense couldn’t make tackles or contain big plays, even against teams like The Citadel.”

Allen, who was officially hired on Jan. 14, brings decades of experience, including seven years as Indiana’s head coach, where he earned national recognition in 2020. Last season, he led Penn State’s defense to top national rankings in several categories, including tackles for loss and total defense. Clemson is coming off a rough year defensively, finishing near the middle of the pack in points allowed and near the bottom in run defense. Acho thinks Allen’s arrival could help reverse the decline.

“Clemson’s defense used to be dominant, but that’s no longer the case,” Acho said. “Allen has a proven ability to elevate defenses, and he’ll provide the leadership they need.”

With a talented roster featuring rising stars like Sammy Brown and Avieon Terrell, Acho feels Allen has the pieces in place to turn things around.

“Clemson’s roster is full of talent,” Acho added. “Now they’ve got someone who can maximize it.”
