Gerwyn Price lands nine-dart finish to send crowd wild but incredibly loses Premier League match

Gerwyn Price landed a perfect nine-dart leg, but fell to a shock defeat against Stephen Bunting.

The ‘Iceman’ had already qualified for the Premier League play-offs at London’s O2 arena on May 29 going into his quarter-final clash with Bunting.

But he was playing for pride and another £10,000 to his prize fund, as he travelled up to Aberdeen for Night 15 to take on Bunting.

Price was 5-3 down against the Liverpudlian, who was at the bottom of the pile.

And it appeared the match was slipping away from him until he produced perfection.

Price hit back to back maximum 180’s which drew a roar from the partisan crowd.

The Scottish fans had been against Price, booing him until now where they roared in anticipation.

Price pinned the traditional route, instead beginning on treble 19, before hitting the treble 20 and then landing the double 12.

The Welshman let out one of his trademark roars, with the crowd in raptures and wildly celebrating.

Bunting even saluted his rival with a grin, a real sign of class as he fist-bumped the delighted talisman.

Incredibly though, the momentum from the perfect leg wasn’t enough to carry him through.

Having pulled back the leg, Bunting was able to close out the match in a messy final leg, taking a 6-4 victory.

It was Price’s second perfect leg of the Premier League campaign so far.

The former world champion had already struck gold in Manchester on Night 10.

And as a result, it sees him once again pick up the famous 18ct gold darts trophy, worth £30,000, for his latest achievement.

Price will be delighted to have hit the perfect leg, particularly with nothing on the line in terms of qualification.

Prior to the evening’s play, the 40-year-old had revealed to talkSPORT he was playing with a new set of darts.

He said: “Yeah, the pressure is off. But it’s still a big reward if you win the night.

Price is already through to the night’s play-offsGetty

“It’s £10,000 if you win the night, so I still want to win. But I might be using a new set of darts and next week. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

“One game I feel like I can’t miss, then the next minute I just feel like the grip ain’t there.

“It’s no loss for me to use them tomorrow on one of the biggest stages that we’re going to be able to play in, under the ultimate pressure. I might just try a new set, see how they go.”

Price’s primary focus will be on the play-offs later this month, the showpiece title which will be defended by Luke Littler.

He will hope he can go one better than 2023, when he finished a narrow runner-up to Michael Van Gerwen, tantalizingly close to gaining a big boost in the PDC Order Of Merit.
