Mel Gibson Issues Bold Response to His Newly Appointed Role in Politics

Mel Gibson is opening up about his initial reaction to learning Donald Trump had appointed him as a "special ambassador" to the incoming administration.

In case you missed it, on Thursday, the president-elect revealed that the Braveheart actor had been appointed to a new position in politics, acting as Trump’s "eyes and ears" in Hollywood, which the 78-year-old called "a great but very troubled place."

Along with Gibson, actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone were also tapped to create the "special envoy."

Trump said in a Jan. 16 post shared to his Truth Social platform that all three "will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!"

"These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!" the statement concluded.

Despite Trump's enthusiasm, it appears that The Apprentice personality never actually asked or conferred with the Hollywood stars before making such a grand gesture.

“I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised,” Gibson told Variety shortly after Trump made his declaration. "Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can."

Joking, Gibson boldly added: "Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?"

As Parade previously reported, Gibson was among the countless people who lost their homes to the deadly wildfires that began raging in parts of Southern California a little over a week ago.

During a recent interview with NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports on Thursday, Jan. 9, the 69-year-old filmmaker revealed that he was in the process of recording a Joe Rogan podcast episode when he learned that all that was left of his Malibu home was cinders.

"Obviously, it’s kind of devastating. It’s emotional," Gibson said at the time. "You live there for a long time, and you had all your stuff. You remember George Carlin talking about your stuff? I had my stuff there, and it’s all like, I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff, because it’s all in cinders."

"I was doing the Rogan podcast," he continued. "And kind of ill at ease while we were talking, because I knew my neighborhood was on fire, so I thought, I wonder if my place is still there. But when I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there. I went home and I said to myself, well, at least I haven’t got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore."
