Ben Boulware is stepping into a larger role within Clemson’s football program as he takes on expanded recruiting responsibilities. Head coach Dabo Swinney announced Wednesday that Boulware, who joined the staff last year as an assistant linebackers coach, will hit the recruiting trail during the critical contact period starting this week.
Boulware’s new role comes as Clemson’s newly introduced defensive coordinator, Tom Allen, focuses on other priorities. Swinney confirmed that Allen, who was hired from Penn State, will not participate in on-the-road recruiting. Instead, Allen will dedicate his time to overseeing the defense and aligning the staff and players during his transition.
“Ben will be out on the road,” Swinney said. “We’re finalizing some things with that room, but [Allen] is going to run the defense and always stay with the team. I really, really like that.”
This adjustment allows Allen to concentrate on implementing his defensive strategy and getting the staff on the same page. “The good thing about this is [Allen] doesn’t have to hit the road tomorrow for two weeks of craziness,” Swinney added. “He’ll have time to transition and work with our support staff so that when we get off the road in February, we’ll be much further ahead.”
Boulware’s expanded role reflects Swinney’s confidence in his development and marks a significant step in Clemson’s plans for both recruiting and defensive coordination.
