Timing, totals, impact of Saturday snow and frigid temperatures

DENVER (KDVR) — With over 110 hours of frigid temperatures on tap for this weekend, those who venture outside will have to brave more than just the cold.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday are Pinpoint Weather Alert Days as an arctic blast moves into Colorado and drops temperatures to the teens during the day and the negatives overnight.

With the cold comes some snow, and the metro could accumulate a few inches on Saturday. Alongside subzero overnight temperatures, slick roads and dangerous conditions are possible.

Here is everything you need to know about Saturday's snowstorm.

    Timing

Friday will start as another seasonal and unsuspecting day, but a change moves in by the late evening.

According to the Pinpoint Weather team, Friday will start with some sunshine and temperatures in the middle 40s as clouds increase through the late morning hours. By the late evening and overnight hours, the snow begins.

This is not a long-lasting storm, as the snow will taper off by the late afternoon on Saturday for the metro. Areas like Boulder, Estes Park and the western side of the metro could see lingering snow until around midnight.

    Totals

This storm is not expected to bring huge totals to the metro, but with temperatures in the teens, any accumulation could cause problems on the road.

As of Thursday morning, these are the predicted snow totals through Monday night from Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels:

Boulder and Estes Park: 7-10 inches Colorado Springs: 10 inches Denver International Airport: 3-5 inches Downtown Denver: 4-6 inches West of the metro: 5-7 inches Pinpoint Weather: Metro area snow totals by Jan. 20Pinpoint Weather: Statewide snow totals on Jan. 20

    Impact

Michels said the biggest impact of Saturday's storm is that the snow will stick due to the below-freezing temperatures. As of Thursday, Saturday is expected to have a high of 17 degrees with an overnight low of minus two degrees, meaning Sunday morning could also be icy.

Michels also said this snow should be the light and fluffy variety Colorado is used to, versus the wet and slushy snow the state has produced over the past few storms.

However, as the first few flakes fall, there could be some melting due to Friday's mild temperatures. That melting could lead to slick spots as temperatures drop into the teens Friday night.

If you must travel on Saturday, be prepared for slick and snowpacked roads. Take extra time to warm up your car, and give yourself extra room when braking.

While the snow will end on Saturday, single-digit temperatures are expected Monday. Denver won't warm to above freezing until Wednesday, so bundle up and stay safe.
