The National Science Foundation has awarded $3.7 million to a group of six community organizations known as the Leadership Collaborative.
The leadership group plans to use the grant money towards a four-year initiative that will create a platform for local stories surrounding science, technology, engineering, and math.
Members of the Leadership Collaborative include the Fleet Science Center, WorldBeat Center, Project New Village, Elementary Institute of Science, NERDS RULE INC., and the Valencia Park/Malcolm X Branch of the San Diego Public Library.
The “STEM in Your Neighborhood” initiative will focus on encouraging neighborhoods that have typically been overlooked, such as Logan Heights and Stockton, to join the conversation when it comes to STEM and bring forward their own stories about the science community.
In doing so, the Leadership Collaborative hopes to strengthen San Diego’s STEM narrative for the future and create a toolkit that inspires other communities to do the same.
“This project reflects the strength of community partnerships and the power of story sharing to create lasting change,” said Dr. Mwenda KudumuBiggs, Vice President for Community Service and Engagement at the Fleet Science Center.
“By collaborating with trusted partners and the residents of NSSD, we aim to reshape STEM narratives and ensure they reflect the lived experiences and aspirations of all communities.”
