Mom’s car sunroof shatters ‘spontaneously’ feet from child sparking warning to inspect glass to avoid injury and damage

A DRIVER whose sunroof spontaneously shattered has warned others of the potentially dangerous design flaw.

Countless car models that come with a sunroof could run the risk of the bizarre phenomenon – which has left investigators baffled.

Speaking to Action9, Ryan, who withheld her last name, from north Charlotte, North Carolina, revealed she was driving her 2019 Infiniti QX50 on WT Harris Boulevard when its panoramic sunroof shattered.

She said: “I just heard a loud boom.”

“My daughter was in the car. I turned around and I said, ‘Did you hear that? Is everything okay?’

“I didn’t know what was happening.”

At the time, Ryan believed someone had attacked her vehicle while she was driving.

She added: “I was so thankful that the sunroof guard was closed because, had it not been, the glass would have just started raining down on us.”

“But I want others to be aware because, had that vehicle shade been open, we could have been hurt in the process.”

She said that she later called the manufacturer and took the SUV back to the dealer.

However, they would not cover the damage and she was forced to turn to her insurance provider.

According to Action9, this is not a rare occurrence and has been investigated by federal investigators in the past.

Indeed, the issue was looked into over a seven-year period after some 4,000 complaints were made by drivers of 13 different car brands.

However, the investigation was frustratingly closed in April 2024 without the cause being determined; concluding that it was not a safety concern and offering no answer to why the glass breaks spontaneously.

Action9’s Jason Stoogenke investigated the issue further and came up with a handful of helpful tips that could help avoid the incident.

This includes having a chip or crack in the sunroof checked out, which could result in a new sunroof being required.

Car owners should also choose laminated glass over tempered glass, as it’s stronger and stays in one piece if it’s shattered.

This comes as an expert mechanic has warned car owners over taking too long to change their oil – revealing the “disgusting” consequences.

A TikToker recently gave Kia and Hyundai owners something to think about in a video by showing off the mess he pulled from the valve covers of a Kia.

According to the gearhead, a rank, sludgey mess is a “common” sight for Kia drivers who blindly follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when it comes to oil change intervals.

Showing off the mess to the camera, he said: “This is why you don’t do oil changes every 7,500 miles on a Kia or a Hyundai.”
