Johni Broome has been a major force for Auburn in the 15-1 start for Bruce Pearl and the Tigers. However, he had Auburn fans holding their breath after he left the win over South Carolina with an ankle injury.
Broome was just 3-for-11 against the Gamecocks before the injury, but he is a veteran leader for Auburn as an all-around contributor. The good news is it appears Broome avoided a major setback.
According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Broome’s diagnosis is a non-surgical ankle sprain following a Sunday morning MRI. A timeline for Johni Broome’s return has not been reported, but it’s a good sign he is expected to avoid surgery for the issue.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) January 12, 2025Auburn is off to a 3-0 start in SEC play and is the No. 2 team in the country, and Broome is a major reason why. He leads the Tigers in minutes played, points per game (17.9), rebounding (10.7), assists (3.3) and blocks (2.7) as a true all-around star.
There is no good time to lose Broome, and the schedule only gets tougher for the Tigers moving forward. Auburn started the SEC slate with 3 unranked opponents but that changes this week.
Auburn returns home to face Mississippi State in a midweek game and a weekend road trip to face Georgia could also feature a ranked Bulldogs squad when the new AP Poll comes out. After that, the Tigers will face Tennessee on Jan. 25 and then move to the start of February with 3 straight games against teams currently ranked.
Hopefully Broome is back on the court before those marquee matchups in league play arrive.
