At least 20 people have been arrested after looting evacuated homes in Los Angeles, including two people who posed as firefighters, a police captain has said.
“Looting is an issue, the number of arrests is continuously growing,” Captain Mike Lorenz of the Los Angeles Police Department told a community meeting in the Palisades yesterday evening.
“We even made arrests of two individuals that were actually posing as firefighters coming in and out of houses,” he added.
It comes as the death toll from California’s devastating wildfires has risen to 16.
The two largest wildfires blazing in Los Angeles – the Eaton and Palisades fires – had not been contained in the 24 hours leading to Sunday morning.

The Eaton Fire in the Pasadena area also remained at 15 per cent containment. It had burned across more than 14,000 acres by Sunday, according to Cal Fire.
Nearly 35,000 homes and businesses in Los Angeles were without electricity on Sunday morning, according to Poweroutage.us, a website which monitors outages.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles county officials said they sent multiple invites to president-elect Donald Trump to see fire-hit areas, but have not received a response.
