Five days into the offseason and we already have news of the Chicago Bears making an addition to their offensive line.
News from ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, who reports the Bears have claimed offensive lineman Jordan McFadden off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers:

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) January 10, 2025Watching the NFL offseason roster churn is one of my guilty pleasures. Names come and go. But the churn and burn between the end of one season and the start of another seems like a never-ending cycle. If loving that is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.
Who is Jordan McFadden and why did the Bears grab him off waivers?
Jordan McFadden was a fifth-round pick (156th overall) by the Chargers in 2023. The Clemson product has played 13 games in two seasons and has two starts under his belt — both coming as a rookie in 2023. This is what two NFL Draft insiders had to say about McFadden when writing up his pre-draft profile in 2023:
Lance Zerilein:
Three-year starter and team captain with experience at both tackle spots. McFadden lacks the height/length to stay at tackle in the NFL, but he has the broad frame and run-blocking acumen to fit as a guard. He’s firm and accurate into blocks using good footwork to drive and turn opponents. He lacks ideal mass and will get dumped by twitchy run defenders at times. His protection experience at tackle is a big plus in his favor, but he still needs to fire his hands with better efficiency and from a tighter track. McFadden is a reliable prospect lacking desired measurables but has the chance to become a good backup with eventual starter potential.
Chad Reuter:
The South Carolina Offensive Lineman of the Year at Dorman High School as a senior redshirted in his first year at Clemson, playing in three games as a reserve for the national champions. McFadden played in 14 games as a reserve and on special teams in 2019. McFadden played well enough in 12 starts at right tackle in 2020 to earn honorable mention All-ACC notice from league coaches. He was a second-team all-conference selection for his play in 13 starts at left tackle in 2021 before winning the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the league’s top blocker in 14 starts on the blindside in 2022.
This isn’t a game-changing move by any stretch of the imagination. But after failing to acquire the requisite depth to get through the 2024 NFL season, the Bears front office needs to be aggressive and open-minded when it comes to addressing the team’s offseason needs. And if that means rummaging through the waiver wire to build up competition on the depth chart in an attempt to build depth, then so be it. Chicago’s football team cannot repeat the mistakes it made last offseason and expect to be better in 2025.
Bears QB Caleb Williams / Mandatory Credit: Brad Rempel-Imagn ImagesI want to joke about how the positive spin here is that the Chicago Bears are being proactive in re-working the offensive line. But I hope that, at some point soon, I can earnestly write about Chicago’s football team making additions to the offensive line that move the needle. This seems to be a good class to draft offensive linemen and there are some worthwhile fits worth targeting in free agency, too.
To tie this up neatly at the end, I tip my cap to Chicago’s front office for using its waiver position to add to the roster. You can roll your eyes all you want, but you can’t tell me depth additions don’t matter when we saw what a lack of depth did to the Bears’ offensive line this season. Then again, I want to be careful not to give this group too much credit. This is the type of transaction I would have loved seeing during the season. With that being said, I hope this is the first of many transactions involving the Bears and new offensive linemen this offseason. How could it not be?
