Fans spot ‘hidden’ moment John Cena breaks character in volatile WWE Backlash press conference

R-Truth is the absolute nemesis of all WWE performers.

Never mind the on-screen storyline-driven battle of good guys versus villains in the world of professional wrestling – Truth is the real star wrestlers want to avoid.

Few wrestlers have raised as many smiles as R-TruthWWE

The reason? He is, simply, catastrophically funny. Naturally charismatic, he is something of a lethal weapon for wrestlers whose job it is to keep a straight face.

Real-life 53-year-old Ron Killings is an accomplished wrestler and a decorated performer when it comes to action between the ropes.

In TNA he held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and, in WWE, he’s twice held the United States Championship in addition to several runs as a tag team champion.

In more recent years, though, some of his high-profile victories have come not in scoring a three count to end a match with an opponent, but in not touching them at all.

For the perfect example, you’d need look no further than Brock Lesnar.

In 2020, a backstage plan was hatched for brutish Lesnar – rarely renowned for his smiling and laughing – to crack under the strain of Truth’s hilarity when they shared the ring.

It worked a treat, too. Truth explained: “I come to Gorilla [backstage] and Paul [Heyman – advisor to Lesnar] was there. He’s like, ‘Hey, we got a bet going on [that] you can make Brock laugh…

“‘We’re not going to tell him what you’re gonna say, we don’t want to hear what you want to say. We just go.’

On-screen underdog Truth took a customary beating from Lesnar, but not before getting him to break character, the star adding: “That was the most impromptu thing that just came off like sliced bread. It was just great.”

The veteran’s regular appearances on TV – usually popping up backstage to create some amusement – rarely see any star spared, not least WWE Undisputed Champion John Cena.

One of Truth’s long-running gags is that Cena was his ‘boyhood hero’ – despite the fact the champ is five years his senior and the two emerged into the industry at roughly the same time.

So when Cena successfully defended his title against Randy Orton at Backlash, thanks in part to Truth providing a distraction near the end of the bout, it was perhaps no surprise he wanted to catch up with his ‘hero’ afterward.

He did so by gatecrashing Cena’s appearance at the post-show press conference, just as the star had begun to open up to journalists in the room.

Speaking in character, the multi-time world champion appeared to show regret over his previous antics at press conferences and offered to ‘answer all questions.’

He explained: “I need to be better with you guys; I need to walk the talk.

“If I am the last real champion and if I am the greatest of all time, in this little time I have left, I shouldn’t patronise the people who help the reach of what we do.

Truth ended up in a heap after taking Cena’s finishing move through a tableWWE Instagram/queenoftheringFootage inside the room captured a noticeable smile and an auditable laugh from a supposedly moody Cena[/caption]

“I should be more accepting and empathetic. In the past, I have chosen not to field any questions because I couldn’t get out of my own way.

“So, I am going to try and take a step in the right direction… and would now like to open the floor and field all questions.”

Cena waited while a first question was thrown his way but, before he could deliver an answer, a delighted Truth bounded in to congratulate his pal.

He beamed: “Hey, JC, John. Congratulations, man. I am so proud of you! I never gave up; I’ve always supported you.

“You know, we’ve got a lot of history together, you know what I’m talking about.

“I’m so proud of you, even if people say you suck and you can’t wrestle.”

Cena enjoyed an eventful night of it at Backlash – and so did R TruthWWE

Brooding, Cena stood up to Truth and threatened ‘consequences’ if he continued to talk, which Truth obviously did.

The retiring Cena delivered on his promise and promptly delivered his finishing move on his colleague through the table he was sat at.

It made for a chaotic scene and, supposedly, not a funny one, though fans watching closely did spot Truth working his magic once again.

Cena has cut a moody and expressionless figure in his current run as a villain, but at the point he mentioned he and Cena having ‘history’ together, footage filmed at the event shows the legend couldn’t help cracking a smile.

Looking down and wearing a cap that concealed much of his face, the 48-year-old is seen struggling to suppress the smirk and even lets out a laugh before quicky recovering and starting to frown again.

The headlines from the press conference were that of poor Truth being laid out – a storyline between he and Cena seeming likely in the future – but that didn’t stop some fans saluting the funnyman for his latest accomplishment.

One on social media observed: “He was supposed to be deadpan and stoic but from what I’ve seen in the past R-truth can make literally anyone laugh.

Another said: “He wasn’t supposed to laugh. Truth cracked him.”

A third commented: “He couldn’t help himself; nobody can stay in character around truth, he’ll make you break almost every time.”

R-Truth, despite his lengthy tenure in WWE, has been given his flowers all too rarely given the scope of his contribution.

In tangling with Cena – and getting him to break character – fans are at least able to tip their collective caps to him once again.
