After the chance of drizzle on the North Coast passes Friday, gusty winds are expected to return to the Mendocino Coast by Saturday, the National Weather Service reported.
In their Forecast Discussion prepared for Jan. 10, staff at the Eureka Office of the NWS note that “gusty northerly winds along the coast and robust offshore flow across the interior mountains will return this weekend. Drier air mass, clearer skies and light winds in the valleys will make for cold and chilly mornings this weekend into early next week.”
On Friday, the NWS reported that “high pressure has begun to slightly weaken as a shortwave upper-level trough approaches the Pacific Northwest. Shallow moist air associated with a decaying cold front will bring light rain and drizzle for the North Coast by late morning through early afternoon. Areas of low clouds and fog are expected to develop across the interior valleys (Friday) night into Saturday morning.”
As for the winds, the NWS explains that “East-Northeast (winds) are expected to develop across the interior, with the strongest winds over the highest terrain. Pressure gradients tighten up on Saturday, and winds should increase for coastal areas and across the interior mountains.. with the potential for anomalous wind speeds for coastal areas, particularly from Cape Mendocino southward. Gusty northerly winds from 25 to 35 mph are forecast along the coast Saturday afternoon.”
As for winds inland, the NWS notes that “East-Northeast (winds) will increase across the interior mountains this weekend. Gusts from 25 to 40 mph are anticipated over the higher terrain, with the strongest winds over the eastern and southern portion of Lake County. Ridges and exposed terrain will gust to 50 mph or more for sure. The highest terrain in Lake County has a 35 to 55 percent probability of exceeding 45 mph on Saturday.”
As for temperatures, the NWS predicts that “the airmass will be slightly colder and drier this weekend, bringing near or below freezing low temperatures for lower elevations, and possibly for coastal areas, too. Frost and freezing temperatures are probable this weekend into early next week, both along the coast and in the interior valleys.”
The NWS forecast for the next few days is:
Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 61. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 62. Light and variable wind. Monday: Sunny, with a high near 60. Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 62. Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 62. Read More Details
