The Chicago Bears will have a new head coach in 2025. And like the team that fired Matt Eberflus on Black Friday, we’re getting an early start on the search with this series that will profile potential head coaches for the franchise that resides at Halas Hall.
The Chicago Bears will interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken for their head coaching vacancy. Monken brings a lengthy résumé to the table that checks plenty of boxes, including his most recent work with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
For what it’s worth: While working through these profiles, I’m looking for a reason to say no to a candidate as a means to fleshing out the top candidates from the rest, and I will say this: Monken is one of the few candidates through 11 profiles I’ve completed where I have zero reasons to say no to his hiring.

Todd Monken’s Coaching Origins and Influences
Todd Monken’s 36-year coaching career has been defined by his innovative approach to offensive football, with a wealth of experience spanning collegiate and NFL levels. Monken began his coaching journey in 1989 as a graduate assistant at Grand Valley State, laying the groundwork for a career that would include prominent roles at both levels of the game.
In college football, Monken served as offensive coordinator at Eastern Michigan, Oklahoma State, and the University of Georgia. At Georgia (2020–2022), he orchestrated back-to-back national championship offenses, combining dynamic passing and rushing schemes that helped establish the Bulldogs as a national powerhouse.
Monken’s NFL career has been equally impressive, with stops as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens. In 2023, he guided the Ravens’ high-powered offense to a top-five ranking in scoring and total yards, helping quarterback Lamar Jackson earn his second MVP award. His offenses are known for their efficiency, ranking among the league’s best in passing yards, third-down conversion rates, and overall production.
Throughout his career, Monken has demonstrated a unique ability to adapt his strategies to maximize his players’ strengths, crafting innovative game plans that have consistently delivered results. Under his tutelage, quarterback Lamar Jackson is the favorite to win a second consecutive MVP Award this season.

Monken’s work in Baltimore, including back-to-back (likely) MVP seasons for Lamar Jackson, is top-of-mind, but his work maximizing quarterbacks and offenses goes well beyond Jackson and the Ravens.
Monken’s ability to develop quarterbacks is well-documented. During his tenure as offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2019, he helped Baker Mayfield achieve a career-high 3,827 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, showcasing his skill in maximizing a quarterback’s potential.
In Tampa Bay, Monken oversaw the duo of Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick, guiding an offense that led the NFL in passing yards (320.3 per game) in 2018. His system emphasized vertical passing concepts, averaging a league-high 10.3 air yards per attempt, which would align perfectly with Caleb Williams’ ability to stretch the field.
Monken has consistently demonstrated his ability to get the best out of his playmakers. In Tampa Bay, he orchestrated record-breaking seasons for WR Mike Evans, who recorded a career-high 1,524 receiving yards and earned Pro Bowl honors under Monken’s guidance. Similarly, Monken helped Odell Beckham Jr. achieve his most recent 1,000-yard season in Cleveland.
For the Bears, Monken’s ability to build an offense around Williams while maximizing the output of key skill players like DJ Moore and the running back corps could transform the team into an offensive juggernaut.
Monken has showcased a diverse offensive approach tailored to his personnel throughout his career. From Tampa Bay’s high-powered vertical attack to Cleveland’s balanced offense featuring Nick Chubb’s league-leading rushing production, Monken has proven adaptable. This flexibility would be invaluable in designing an offense suited to Caleb Williams’ dual-threat capabilities, blending deep passing concepts with a strong ground game to take advantage of Williams’ elite athleticism and arm talent.
One Big Question
Monken’s track record of maximizing quarterbacks and offenses at the pro and collegiate levels speaks for itself, so the big question here revolves around how he plans to do that while being the big boss.
Monken’s leadership extends beyond Xs and Os. With over 36 years of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels, including successful stints as a head coach at Southern Mississippi and offensive coordinator for national champion Georgia, Monken has a track record of guiding teams to success. His experience managing high-pressure situations and developing young talent makes him an ideal leader for a Bears team in search of stability and direction.
He’s not my No. 1 choice, but Monken checks most, if not all, of the boxes that the brass at Halas Hall should be looking to check during the interview process.
