Fox News Host Claps Back at Conservatives Controversial Claims About Cause of California Fires

As conspiracy theories about the origins of the Los Angeles fires continue to spread, Fox News host Jessica Tarlov slammed her colleagues on The Five over their claims that diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are somehow to blame.

Conservatives have attempted to link a DEI program in California to the efforts of firefighters to contain the blaze, with some criticizing the record of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin M. Crowley, the first woman and first LGBTQ+ person to lead the department.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, Tarlov defended Crowley, a public servant for over two decades, according to The Huffington Post.

“There is so much bad information swirling around about the main players involved in this like the fire chief has been called a DEI hire. I’d take her resume any day,” Tarlov said, going on to list her accomplishments.

“Twenty-four-year vet, paramedic, engineer, fire inspector, captain, battalion chief, fire marshal, deputy chief.”

Tarlov's co-host, Greg Gutfeld, responded by saying she was "proving" his point.

“No, I’m not proving your point, she is qualified for that job,” Tarlov argued.

Critics including Elon Musk and Megyn Kelly have blamed the fire department’s DEI initiative for the rapidly spreading wildfires, including a post from Musk on Wednesday night that “DEI means people DIE.”

However, there is no evidence directly linking the two, according to Forbes. Although Kelly claimed on her podcast that Crowley “has made not filling the fire hydrants top priority, but diversity," multiple reports have said the city's Department of Water and Power is responsible for filling fire hydrants, not the fire department.

On CNN, Rep. Jasmine Crockett told conservative political commentator Scott Jennings that she was “so tired” of DEI being blamed and to “stop acting as if white men are the only ones capable.” CNN anchor Abby Phillip also challenged Jennings, giving the LAFD credit for their efforts to fight a “historic fire.”
