Avoiding Another Stinker, Vucevic’s Tough Matchup, Shocking Clutch Record, and Other Bulls Bullets

Two nights after delivering one of their least-spirited efforts of the season, the Chicago Bulls will have to bounce back against their kryptonite … THE WASHINGTON WIZARDS!

As bad as the Bulls’ 129-113 loss to Indiana on Wednesday night was, I think their New Year’s Day fumbling against Washington still sits atop the “Yuck” list. The Wizards beat the Bulls 125-107 behind their second-best shooting performance from long range this season (17-36). They also dished a season-high 36 assists while their 29th-ranked defense forced Chicago into 20 turnovers. Was it an uncharacteristically good game for the Wizards or a pitiful performance for the Bulls? Por qué no los dos? If one thing is for sure, this was a game that further exposed the Bulls’ defense. Jordan Poole feasted against Chicago’s backcourt with 30 points, while the Wizards’ consistent ball movement had the Bulls stumbling on rotation and leaving shooters wide open. Alex Sarr and Jonas Valaciunas also gave Nikola Vucevic a tough time for the second time this season. The two combined for 25 points 16 rebounds, 11 assists, and 3 steals. Using their elite length and strength, Vucevic managed only 12 points on 5-17 shooting. Indeed, if the Bulls can’t find a way to get Vucevic going tonight, we could be in store for another ugly game. The big man should come in plenty motivated, as the Pacers also found success against him despite the absence of top-tier shot blocker Myles Turner. Vucevic shot the ball only nine times on Wednesday night and scored 10 points. As long as he is wearing a Bulls uniform, there is practically no excuse for finishing with single-digit shot attempts in any contest. Not only does he need to be more assertive, but the Bulls have to do a much better job feeding him in the post. Recognizing mismatches and converting entry passes have been confusingly difficult for this team at times. © Brett Davis-Imagn Images After starting the season as one of the NBA’s better offensive teams, the Bulls have seen their scoring efficiency trend in the wrong direction. Kirk Goldsberry’s latest efficiency landscape now has them hanging out in the NBA’s worst quadrant possible. They have sat 21st in both offensive rating and defensive rating over the last ten games, where they have surprisingly gone 5-5.

    — Kirk Goldsberry (@kirkgoldsberry) January 10, 2025 Want to hear something crazy? The Chicago Bulls have been pretty freakin’ great in the clutch. While they only hold an 8-7 record in such games this season they are 7-3 in games that are still within 5 points with 2 minutes remaining. What to hear something even crazier? They are actually 7-1 in games that are within a single possession with 1 minute remaining, per NBA Stats. I guess DeMar DeRozan left some of his magic behind. The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie released his latest mock draft, and I’ve got bad news! He currently has the Bulls handing over the No. 11 pick in the draft to the San Antonio Spurs – aka the worst possible outcome. If they’re going to forfeit the pick, at least don’t let it be right on the cusp. Anyway, I highly recommend you read it. I love Vecenie’s work, and this latest mock does a great job highlighting just how deep this lottery should be. The LiAngelo Ball takeover continues …

The Chicago Bulls Need So Much More From Patrick Williams Patrick Kane spoke about a possible return to the ice for Jonathan Toews. Tab shared his comments here. The Cubs made a move on Thursday afternoon, and they also failed to reach a contract agreement with Kyle Tucker. Who could’ve seen that coming!? Brett covers it all in his morning post.
