Costco fans spot identical items next to each other with $20 difference – and it’s all thanks to two numbers at the end

COSTCO shoppers were left confused after spotting essentially identical items on the shelves with a $20 price difference.

Shoppers speculated that the price disparity between the sets of glass cups came down to the symbolic two numbers at the end of their price tags.

Costco is known to offer a variety of great deals on its products, but understanding the chain’s pricing strategies can take some deciphering.

The warehouse club uses numbers and symbols to indicate discounts, clearance, and other information about an item.

One Costco shopper was left confused after noticing three sets of glassware were priced so differently.

An eight-piece set of blue glass cups was marked as $29.99, while red and green sets were labeled as $9.97 – an over $20 difference.

“Why are the red and green cups cheaper than the blue cups???” asked the baffled shopper in a post to Reddit.

Other Costco members were quick to explain that the drastic price gap could be attributed to two numbers found on both price tags.

Shoppers pointed out that the price for the red and green cups ended in $0.97 – Costco’s symbol that the item is on clearance.

“Anything that ends in .97 are sales items that once gone are gone forever,” explained one member.

On the other hand, the price tag for the blue glassware ended in $0.99, indicating that the set was at full price.

Costco members also concluded that the pricing disparity likely came down to the colors of the cups, with the red and green sets being more of a seasonal item due to their association with Christmas.

“Red and green are more likely seasonal, and blue is probably always in demand,” commented one member.

The Reddit post was flooded with similar comments, noting that the blue glassware is likely more popular year-round and no price reduction was needed to clear the inventory.

    SYMBOLIC SHOPPING

Redditors also pointed out another of Costco’s pricing symbols on the two glassware price tags – the asterisk.

Dubbed the Costco Death Star, the retailer uses the symbol to alert customers that an item is likely to be discontinued, won’t be restocked, or is seasonal.

These products are often discounted to help clear the shelves of them, but this isn’t always the case – as seen with the blue glassware.

    Costco's Pricing Symbols

Costco uses a variety of symbols and numbers to indicate information about a product.

$.99: full price $.97: on clearance or manager discount $.49 or $0.79: on sale for a limited time $.00: deep discount Death Star (*): may be discontinued soon

In the case that Costco does mark down an item that will be discontinued, shoppers can score some major discounts.

For example, members spotted the Death Star and $0.97 symbols on the price tag of a popular breakfast treat.

Twelve-count packs of mini cinnamon rolls from the Sprout Creek Bakery brand were indicated as being discontinued, marked down to just $1.97 each.

“So dangerously good. Trying to have some self-control right now,” wrote one Costco member, tempted by the cheap dessert.

“Need to reappropriate a Costco forklift to get them to the register…. stat,” joked another customer.

As Costco shoppers scour the aisles for shopping deals, others are critiquing the company for some of its policies.

One member “absolutely detests” one of the chain’s new policies that removes “choice” for members.

Another shopper claimed that Costco’s rewards policy was a “serious problem” for certain members and that the manager offered “no answer.”
