Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence provides update on shoulder injury

Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence met with the media on Thursday and part of that conversation centered around his shoulder injury.

Lawrence was at the podium with a sling on his left shoulder after undergoing surgery. The surgery, said Lawrence, took place about three weeks ago and he will be in the sling for about three more weeks.

“It’s good. I don’t know the exact timeline,” Lawrence said. “But it’s getting better, I’m starting to do more rehab on the shoulder, starting to move it a little bit. So it’s been good.”

Lawrence suffered the injury in the team’s Week 9 matchup with Philadelphia. As he described on Thursday, part of the difficulty with this injury in-season was that “it’s not a clear cut immediately after ‘you gotta get surgery” type of injury, said Lawrence.

As far as how to handle the injury, while AC joint injuries can be common, Lawrence noted that the one he was working through was a bit different and because of that, there wasn’t necessarily a straight forward answer on how to handle the injury during the season.

Time was required, which Lawrence gave it, missing Weeks 10-12. From there, his shoulder began to feel better and Lawrence wanted to play against Houston in Week 13 and then determine the next steps based on how things went in that game and how he felt.

Unfortunately, that was the game that Lawrence left with a concussion after being hit by Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair while sliding.

Due to the severity of that hit, Lawrence was going to have to miss some time, and that coupled with the shoulder injury, he and the team ultimately decided it was best to go on injured reserve and get the surgery now, rather than during the offseason.

Lawrence added that this afforded the offense some continuity, knowing that Mac Jones would be the starter moving forward.

So as Lawrence continues to rehab, when might he be back on the football field?

“I’ll definitely be good by the season, obviously, and I’m hoping for most of OTAs too,” Lawrence said. “But I don’t know, I can’t give you an exact–obviously, going to be smart with it and not rush into OTAs too quickly. But it’s not going to effect really too much of the offseason, and hopefully I’ll being able to train in the next couple of months.”

Typically OTAs begin around the month of May for NFL teams. Even if Lawrence isn’t quite ready when OTAs arrive, it does sound like he could potentially be available for training camp to get those valuable reps.
