The National Weather Service on Wednesday extended a “red flag” wildfire warning through the end of the week for much of East County.

The alert for the county’s inland valleys and mountains went into effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday and will last until 6 p.m. Friday, 24 hours longer than initially planned.

The lingering period of dry and blustery Santa Ana conditions across Southern California includes forecasts of northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph in the valleys, with gusts up to 50 mph. In the East County highlands, sustained ground-level air currents of 30 to 40 mph will be likely, with gusts potentially as high as 75 mph, meteorologists said.

Santa Ana winds will restrengthen Thursday and last into Friday for inland areas. Slightly weaker than Wednesday for areas north of San Diego County. Slightly stronger than Wednesday for San Diego County. Critical fire weather conditions are expected! pic.twitter.com/7MdME6vsEn

Daytime humidity levels could range as low as 9 to 15%, creating conditions in which “any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly,” the NWS cautioned.

The region has escaped harm so far, as Los Angeles battles its most destructive fire ever. Some San Diego Gas & Electric customers though have been forced to deal with planned outages in an attempt to ease fire dangers.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria encouraged residents to have an emergency plan in place as dangerous conditions persist.

“We’ve seen firsthand how wildfires can devastate our communities, which is why preparation is critical,” he said. “I urge all San Diegans to take proactive steps now – create your emergency plans, assemble a supply kit and stay informed. Being ready today can make all the difference when faced with wildfire danger.”
