Josh Blackwell Wins NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

I realize that the Chicago Bears’ search for a new head coach is the story right now, but I do not mind taking a break from our obsessive following of that storyline to give Josh Blackwell his flowers.

Blackwell, who had that epic punt return touchdown in Chicago’s Week 18 win against the Green Bay Packers, won the NFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week award for his efforts.

    Way to go, Josh:

Your Special Teams Player of the Week ?Congrats, @JoshuaBlackwe12!

Blackwell joins punter Tory Taylor and tight end-turned-long snapper Cole Kmet as Bears players to win the award this season. After Sunday’s win, I thought either Josh Blackwell or Cairo Santos had a shot to win the last Special Teams Player of the Week award for the 2024 regular season. And while I believe Santos nailing a game-winning 51-yard field goal to end the Bears’ lengthy losing streak against the Packers gave him a good chance, I am glad that Blackwell is bringing home the hardware. If not for Blackwell’s touchdown, Santos’ heroics wouldn’t have happened.

In addition to his 94-yard punt return touchdown that was highlighted by an epic deke of the entire Packers special teams unit, Blackwell added an assist on a special teams tackle while playing on 63 percent of the special teams snaps. What a day at the office for the Duke Univeristy product.

A cornerback by trade, Josh Blackwell is in his third year with the Bears. He has appeared in 43 games and even made two starts. Blackwell collected an interception in Chicago’s win against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the team’s Week 6 trip to London.

Josh Blackwell is one of the many free agents to be on the Chicago Bars’ roster. But Blackwell carries a restricted free-agent tag. Restricted free agents (RFAs) are players with expiring contracts who have played three or fewer accrued seasons. The Bears could assign a tender to Blackwell, which would allow the team an opportunity to match an offer sheet signed by another team. It is tough to project if Blackwell will be back with Chicago’s football team for another season without knowing what the coaching staff will look like when that decision needs to be made. However, special teams splash plays and ability to pitch in as a defensive back will help his cause.
