At least three Pacific Palisades schools damaged by Palisades fire ...Middle East

Fires raging across Southern California have burned through several schools, though officials are still trying to get a full accounting of the damage.

Palisades Charter High School, Palisades Charter Elementary School and Marquez Elementary School were significantly damaged by the Palisades fire, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson said in a Wednesday, Jan. 8, email.

The school district is working with authorities and emergency response teams to assess the situation and determine the next steps, according to the email. This includes creating plans to minimize disruption to instruction, the spokesperson said.

The district is looking for funding relief for schools affected by the fires and extreme winds.

In Pasadena schools, there are reports that the Eaton fire hit the former Franklin Elementary School on Tuesday night, Jan. 7.

For example, Muir High School Athletic Director Alfredo Resendiz said that Franklin Elementary School in Altadena, a mile away from Muir, had been burned down by the Eaton fire. Resendiz said he saw the damage while driving.

However, a Pasadena Unified School District official on Wednesday could not confirm that there has been any damage to district schools.

“Because the fire is still ongoing and containment is low, there are some areas we cannot get into,” spokeswoman Hilda Ramirez Horvath said. “We are still assessing conditions.”

Franklin Elementary closed in 2020, she added, but has been used for other purposes.
