Lt. John Malan of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has been named the new captain for the department’s Vista Station, local officials announced.

Malan, who has been with the department since 2012, took over last month after former Capt. John Boyce’s promotion.

Malan started his SDSO career as a deputy and most recently, served as the Ramona Substation lieutenant, beginning in July 2023. Malan has a previous connection to the city of Vista, having served as the Vista Station Patrol Supervisor from 2018 to 2020.

City Manager John Conley, in a news release, expressed confidence in Malan’s leadership, praising his “deep understanding of our community’s needs.”

“John Malan’s extensive experience and proven track record in law enforcement make him an outstanding choice for this role,” Conley said.

Malan has served in several specialized roles within the SDSO, including assignments in Internal Affairs, the Major Crimes Division, Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Investigation, Area Investigations and the Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT).

He has received numerous accolades, including a Certificate of Commendation, Exemplary and Outstanding Performance and Meritorious Unit Citations.

“The city of Vista, its residents and the dedicated deputies serving this community deserve the best,” Malan said. “I’m honored to join a team committed to enhancing safety, fostering growth and improving the quality of life for all. Together, I look forward to making a positive and lasting impact on this thriving community.”
