Brian Matusz Passes Away aged at 37

Brian Matusz, a prominent figure in the world of baseball, passed away at the age of 37 on January 7, 2025. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, former teammates, and sports organizations alike. Matusz was celebrated for his exceptional career at the University of San Diego (USD), where he set numerous records, including leading the NCAA in strikeouts in 2008. This remarkable performance led to his selection as the fourth overall pick in the MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles later that same year. His influence extended beyond statistics; he was known for his leadership qualities and work ethic during his time with USD.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, Matusz pitched in 279 games (68 starts) for Baltimore from 2009-16. He made only one big league appearance for a team other than the O’s -- a three-inning start for the Cubs on July 31, 2016, in their most recent championship season.

“A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-16, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched,” the Orioles said in a statement. “He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate and always had a smile on his face.”

After running into some struggles over the next two seasons, Matusz moved to the bullpen. He tossed around 50 innings with an ERA of 3.53 or better in each season between 2013-15. Baltimore traded Matusz to Atlanta early in the ’16 season. The Braves released him without getting him into a game, but he returned to the majors with the Cubs later in the year. Matusz finished his career with stints in Triple-A, Mexico and independent ball.

Over parts of eight seasons, Matusz pitched to a 4.92 ERA through 528 2/3 innings. He won 27 games and recorded 462 strikeouts. He started 69 of his 280 MLB appearances. MLBTR sends our condolences to Matusz’s family, friends and former teammates.

Throughout his eight-year tenure with the Baltimore Orioles from 2009 to 2016, Matusz became a beloved teammate and community member. He recorded a career total of 27 wins against 41 losses with a modest ERA of 4.92. Notably, Matusz's best season came in 2015 when he achieved an impressive ERA of 2.94. Despite facing challenges throughout his professional journey, including injuries and fluctuating performance levels, he remained committed to the sport and its community .

The cause of Brian Matusz's untimely death remains under investigation; however, tributes have illuminated his character as a kind-hearted individual who shared a deep passion for baseball . As friends and colleagues reflect on their memories with him, it is evident that Matusz’s legacy will endure through both his athletic accomplishments and personal connections established over years spent within Major League Baseball.
