Several area departments will host sites Saturday for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, providing a safe and anonymous way for residents to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications with no questions asked.
The event, which is headed by the Drug Enforcement Administration, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with police agencies across the country hosting sites to prevent medication misuse in an attempt to prevent opioid addiction.
The event launched in the fall of 2010 and has been typically held twice each year since — usually in April and October.
The October 2024 Take Back Day brought in 629,953 pounds, or 314 tons, of medication, according to DEA records. Colorado collected 11,471 pounds — second behind just California of all Western states.
Since the first Take Back Day, collection sites across the country have brought in more than 19.2 million pounds of medication, according to DEA records.
