The Genius Casserole Freezing Hack We Wish Wed Known About Sooner

I absolutely love to cook, but weeknight dinners are often stressful for me—and I know I'm not alone in feeling that way. That's why I love meal prepping! With just a little planning, I'm able to save time, money and some sanity, which my family appreciates.

Opening the freezer to find a casserole or hearty soup just waiting to be reheated is like opening a gift on Christmas morning. No frantic dashes to the store or last-minute takeout regrets—just home-cooked goodness that we can all enjoy.

Making meals ahead of time saves time because you cook batches of food in one go, eliminating the scramble to prep, cook and clean up when you are short on time and patience. Plus, doubling or tripling recipes means buying ingredients in bulk, using what I already have and avoiding impulse purchases, so I save money. Those frozen casseroles make me see dollar signs!

But one thing meal prepping does not save is space in my freezer. Content Creator Stephanie Gigliotti (@stephgigliotti) shared a genius tip for freezing a casserole that saves you a lot of space so you can freeze even more make-ahead meals and I'm impressed! I will definitely be using this the next time I do meal prep.

The Genius Way to Freeze a Casserole

"Do you freeze a lot of meals? This method saves so much space by stacking your meals and frees up your casserole dishes," Stephanie wrote in the caption of her Instagram and TikTok videos.

The method she's talking about is using plastic wrap and parchment paper to freeze casseroles, but she's not talking about wrapping the pan—she wraps the casserole itself. Here's how she does it: First, line your baking dish with plastic wrap, allowing it to overhang on all four sides. Then, place a big piece of parchment paper on top of the plastic wrap, also allowing it to overhang. Once those are in place, she spoon your casserole ingredients onto the parchment paper and wrap the casserole in the paper, then covers that with the plastic wrap, securing it into a tight, casserole-dish-shaped bundle.

Stephanie leaves the wrapped casserole in the baking dish and pops it in the freezer for 30 minutes to help it set. Once it's a little frozen, she takes it out and places it in a freezer bag, which she labels. She said you can wrap the casserole in foil if you have a bigger casserole that won't fit in a Ziploc bag.

This will free up your baking dishes so that you can keep meal prepping, which means you don't have a ton of cleanup while cooking! It also eliminates the need for bulky aluminum pans so that you can fit more food in the freezer.

When you're ready to eat it, just unwrap the casserole, put it back in the casserole dish and bake it as usual. Stephanie says that you can "even bake with the parchment paper instead of removing it, for easy clean up," and this tip just seems to get better and better.

And an added plus is that "all the extra layering of parchment and plastic wrap (or foil) prevents freezer burn," Stephanie said. We definitely needed this great tip!
