Bears Request Interviews With Two AFC North Offensive Coordinators

The Chicago Bears continue to stockpile interview candidates as their search for a new head coach reaches another gear now that the regular season is officially in our rear-view mirror.

A pair of AFC North offensive coordinators are reportedly the latest additions to a lengthy list of interview requests sent out by the Bears today. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith has been requested for a chat regarding the head-coaching vacancy in Chicago. But our AFC North watch doesn’t stop with Smith. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero shares that the Bears have also put in a request for an interview with Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken.

If you are reading this post and thinking that you’ve read about a bunch of names being on the Bears’ radar now that they can officially make requests to talk to head coaching candidates, just know that you aren’t losing your marbles.

The Bears plan on picking the brains of all sorts of coaches

Today has featured a steady flow of NFL insiders sharing names of assistant coaches who are being lined up for interviews with the Bears. Here is today’s list:

Lions OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn Cardinals OC Drew Petzing Vikings DC Brian Flores Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy Broncos DC Vance Joseph Giants OC Mike Kafka

This doesn’t even include Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver, who was name-checked as someone the Bears are interested in discussing their head-coaching vacancy with this offseason. Nor does it include Mike Vrabel, who is reportedly set to interview with the Bears this week. It also doesn’t include Pete Carroll, whose interest in the Bears gig is seemingly being reciprocated.

The additions of Todd Monken and Arthur Smith are intriguing in their own ways. We can begin with Smith, whose shortcomings as the Atlanta Falcons head coach did not really show up in his first year running the Steelers offense.

Arthur Smith, who went 21-30 in three seasons as the Falcons’ head coach, deserves credit for getting Justin Fields to play a quality brand of football as Pittsburgh got off to a 4-2 start with the former Bears quarterback. Fields filled in so well while Russell Wilson was out in the early part of the season with a calf injury that there were understandable conversations about keeping him as the starter. But the Steelers gave the keys to Wilson when he was deemed to be healthy. And when it was Russell’s time to cook, he did. Sometimes, you just have to give credit where it is due.

The happenings in Steel City won’t put Smith anywhere near the top of my head coach wish list. But I suppose his return to prominence and respectability is a reminder that sometimes it is worth giving someone a second chance — but only in the right role.

Todd Monken is a far more interesting head coach candidate to me. Monken, 58, has done wonderful things with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense. Baltimore’s offense finished the year with the third-most points and the most yards gained. The balanced attack is the type of thing you’d do backflips over if you saw it weekly with the Bears. Lamar does it all. Hence, he is in the running for MVP again. But incorporating Zay Flowers, Derrick Henry, Mark Andrews, and others gives Baltimore’s offense layers. And because of it, I feel as if Monken deserves a real shot at an interview.

The Bears sure seem to have cast a wide net. Now, the only things left to do are conduct interviews and reel in the best candidate possible.
