This week’s Daily News boys basketball Top 10 rankings.
BOYS BASKETBALL TOP 10
(Records through Sunday, Jan. 5)
1. Harvard-Westlake (18-1)
The Wolverines went to Arizona and returned home as champs of the Hoophall West tournament after defeating Perry (Arizona), Gonzaga (Washington DC) and De La Salle. The 66-63 win against Gonzaga was particularly impressive, led by Joe Sterling’s 19 points and five assists. Harvard-Westlake starts its Mission League slate at home Wednesday against Chaminade.
2. Notre Dame (14-2)
The Knights finished 2-1 in the Hoophall West, losing 54-53 to Layton Christian Academy in a rematch of a game earlier this season. Tyran Stokes scored 34 points in Notre Dame’s 84-40 win against Coronado (Nevada) to close out the three-game trip to Arizona. The Knights have been without point guard Lino Mark for the past handful of games. Notre Dame opens Mission League play at Crespi on Wednesday.
3. Heritage Christian (15-2)
The Warriors’ losses are against St. John Bosco and Redondo — two of the best teams in Southern California. Heritage Christian rebounded from the losses with impressive wins against Clovis North and Pasadena. Tae Simmons and Dillan Shaw continue to prove they are one of the best duos in the country, combining for 49 of their team’s 65 points in the win over Pasadena. The Warriors have their eye on the Olympic League title, starting with a home matchup against Valley Christian on Tuesday.
4. Sierra Canyon (13-3)
The Trailblazers lost a heartbreaker to Santa Barbara on a buzzer-beater but returned to form in the Memphis Hoopfest with decisive wins against Bartlett (Tennessee) and Houston (Tennessee). Chris Nwuli earned event MVP honors. Sierra Canyon starts its Mission League schedule with a home game against Alemany on Wednesday.
5. Crespi (12-4)
Winners of eight in a row, the Celts are coming together at the right time with Mission League games on the horizon. Peyton White continues to be the anchor while the younger players on the team gain valuable experience. White recorded 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in Crespi’s latest win, a 76-63 victory against Modesto Christian. Crespi starts its league gauntlet with a home showdown against Notre Dame on Wednesday.
6. Campbell Hall (11-5)
The Vikings are led by Isaiah Johnson, but have a deep roster that includes James Bass, Deuce Newt, Deuce Hamilton and Nikita Kochnev. Campbell Hall should be well prepared for the start of the Gold Coast League slate after playing a challenging nonleague schedule. The Vikings will head to Windward on Tuesday.
7. Chaminade (17-3)
The Eagles stacked up a ton of wins leading up to the start of Mission League play, which starts Wednesday against Harvard-Westlake. Chaminade fell to Brentwood 70-50 last week but came back to beat Palos Verdes 52-50, led by Anthony Magee’s 21 points.

The Cowboys had a quiet week, winning their only game 94-80 against Los Altos. Eric Kubel, who has been lights out from range over the last month, scored 33 points in the win. Canyon has a chance to prove doubters wrong and solidify its spot as a top team in the Foothill League against Valencia on Tuesday.
9. St. Francis (13-5)
The Golden Knights, led by coach Todd Wolfson, put together a string of impressive wins last week. St. Francis defeated Oaks Christian, Red Mountain (Arizona) and Bishop O’Dowd, with DeLan Grant leading the way. St. Francis lost to Tualatin 68-43 in the championship game of the Nike Tournament of Champions. The Golden Knights will be at home Wednesday to open Mission League competition against Loyola.
