One day after beating the Green Bay Packers in their regular season finale, the Chicago Bears reportedly want to interview the last coach to bring a Lombardi Trophy to Lambeau Field.
Mike McCarthy, who coached the Packers from 2006 to 2014, is someone the Bears evidently want to speak with regarding their head coaching position:
Chicago Bears have sought permission to interview Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy and are awaiting a response from Dallas, sources tell me and @toddarcher.If the Cowboys don’t allow permission this week, the Bears could interview McCarthy after his exclusive negotiating window… pic.twitter.com/zoS7vHO5mF
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 6, 2025Not only does this news drop around 24 hours after the Bears left Lambeau Field with a 24-22 win against the Packers, it comes just days after a report surfaced indicating that the Chicago head coaching position might be of interest to Mike McCarthy.
This is what we had to say about last week’s report:
Ultimately, I am reminded of how Green Bay Packers fans reacted to McCarthy’s departure in 2018. That fan base was generally happy and carried a vibe that was thankful for his efforts during the good times but was ready to move on with a fresh start. Since parting ways with Mike McCarthy, the Packers have qualified for the playoffs five times, have four 11+ win seasons, and just one losing campaign. It was the right decision to part ways with McCarthy then, so I question why it would be a good move for the Bears to hire him now.
With that being said, I would not be wholly opposed to the Bears hosting an interview with Mike McCarthy. Pick his brain. Gather some football knowledge. The Chicago Bears aren’t in a good enough place to be dismissive of what any qualified candidate has to pitch to them this offseason — even if it comes from a former Packers coach.
What a fascinating web being weaved in the NFL. Grab your popcorn, friends. We’re in for a doozy of an offseason.

I love a good game of chicken. And no matter how this reported pursuit of Mike McCarthy as a Chicago Bears head coaching candidate goes, just know that this is quite the game this franchise is set to play. Follow me for a moment.
Mike McCarthy is under contract with the Dallas Cowboys as their head coach. His deal reportedly expires on January 13, which gives Jerry Jones and the decision-makers in Dallas a nine-day window of exclusivity to cook up a new deal to keep McCarthy with the Cowboys. By putting in an interview request now, the Bears have put the Cowboys in a predicament.
Do you honor the request? If you do, does this mean you are ready to let Mike McCarthy walk away? Or do you deny it? By denying the request, does this count as a sign that the Cowboys are planning to earnestly iron out an extension? This is such a fascinating situation. From a pure drama perspective, this has the potential to be cinema. The Cowboys have yet to respond to the Bears’ request, according to the reporting from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Todd Archer. If Dallas doesn’t respond, then Chicago will have to wait out the negotiation window. It is possible that the Bears could have moved on to another coach by then. What a world.
To be clear, Mike McCarthy is nowhere near my favorite available coaching candidate whose name will pop up during this offseason hiring cycle. However, it is among the most intriguing. McCarthy is a Super Bowl-winning head coach who has experience dealing with tedious owners (Jerry Jones), quarterbacks with out-sized egos (Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre), and has been a winner as a head coach. Maybe Caleb Williams would like to speak with the head coach of the quarterback he grew up idolizing. I wouldn’t put McCarthy high on my pecking order. But I wouldn’t put it past the Bears to do so.
