What’s old is new again at Halas Hall.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Chicago Bears have submitted a request to interview Brian Flores for the team’s head coach vacancy. Flores, who has been the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, was an interview target of the Bears in 2022. The team instead hired Matt Eberflus. Ope!
The Bears are preparing to interview Brian Flores (again)
Back in January 2022, Patrick wrote about Brian Flores being the type of coach the Bears need. Here is a snippet that I found worth re-visiting given the news that Chicago’s football team is angling to interview him again:
After watching nice guys Matt Nagy, John Fox, and Marc Trestman walk the sidelines at Soldier Field for the last nine seasons, I’m ready for some fire. This organization has become a punchline. A charter franchise of the NFL looked down upon as some sort of circus act by the rest of the football world for the perpetual dysfunction for which they’ve become known.
Fast forward from January 2022 to January 2025 and what was said about the Bears then can be said about them now. This organization is still a punchline. It is a franchise that fans of other teams look down on because of the perpetual dysfunction that reigns supreme at Halas Hall. The Bears could use a coach who could light a fire under a sleeping giant. But is that coach Brian Flores?
(Photo by Mark Brown/Getty Images)Brian Flores deserves a ton of credit for his hand in making the Minnesota Vikings a contender this season. His coaching on the defensive side of the ball has given Vikings fans real hope as their favorite team enters the postseason. Minnesota’s Flores-led defense has allowed the fifth-fewest points and ranks 16th in yards allowed. This unit finished the 2024 regular season having forced the most turnovers and coming away with the most interceptions. It is quite the leap for the Vikings, whose defense ranked 28th in scoring and 31st in yards before Flores’ arrival.
Even with the success that Minnesota has had on the defensive side of the ball, the biggest hang-up in Brian Flores’ candidacy has everything to do with what he could do to further develop Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. One of the reasons things did not end well with Flores in Miami is because of how he handled the Tua Tagovailoa situation. Maybe Flores has learned some things regarding how to handle quarterbacks from Kevim O’Connell. If so, then I think Flores is worth interviewing.
Even if Brian Flores doesn’t have the perfect plan for offensive success, I’d still want to hear his pitch — if only because I think it would be enlightening to hear him talk about his defensive philosophy. Don’t get me wrong. I want the Bears to prioritize getting things right on the offensive side of the ball with this next head coach hire. However, after seeing the defense take a step back in 2024, I am open to hearing how a different coach or defensive philosophy could get the most out of a talented group.
The interview requests keep piling up. So stay tuned.
