Major change coming to airport parking lot from January 6 – and drivers could be forced to pay more

THE NEW Year brings in new changes as a major US airport is set to alter the way payments can be made at its parking lot.

Drivers looking to use Denver International Airport’s car park will now have to keep their change in their pockets, as their parking facility is going cashless from Monday, 6 January.

In an announcement that was published last week, kiosks positioned at the exit of the parking lots will soon only accept payment by credit or debit cards, or tap-to-pay methods – including Apple Pay or Google Pay.

According to a statement by the airport, the transition to the new kiosks will be completed by the end of the month.

It is claimed that the new rollout has been introduced to “streamline parking operations” and “improve the overall parking experience for customers.”

However, it’s thought that the change will not affect too many people who use the car park.

Recent statistics revealed those who used cash to pay for parking dropped from 4.25 to 1.11 per cent in 2024, with around 60,000 cash parking transactions made annually.

The airport added that this “represents a small fraction of total annual transactions.”

But those who wish to pay with cash can still do so by using four new kiosks located inside the main terminal.

Positioned on level five, two have been setup atTerminal East between doors 507 and 509, with two at Terminal West between doors 506 and 508.

Those opting for this route must do so before arriving to their vehicle, with the machine there to scan the original parking ticket and provide a receipt, which can then be scanned at the exit of the parking facilities.

Car owners must note that their ticket should be scanned within a given amount of time, depending on the location of their parked car.

At the East and West Garage, there’s a 30-minute time limit, while the East and West Economy is 45 minutes.

Those using the shuttle get 60 minutes.

Drivers are warned that if the time restrictions aren’t met, they will be forced to pay more.

According to Mark Nagel, senior vice president, DEN parking and commercial transportation: “Transitioning to a cashless experience at our exit lane kiosks will improve traffic flow and create an even more efficient operation across all of DEN’s parking locations.”

This comes as a new driving law came to Colorado at the start of 2025 that could affect those who navigate express lanes on certain highways.

Currently, drivers can enter and exit these lanes in designated areas along stretches of the Central 70, I-25’s South Gap, and the US 36 corridor.

But now, those who choose to enter and exit the express lanes outside the designated areas will be fined.

Introduced last year as the Safety and Tolling Enforcement Program affecting only parts of 1-70, the law now includes all tolled express lanes in the state.

Rule-breakers run the risk of hefty fines which double if they’re not paid on time.

The initial $75 penalty must be paid within 20 days; after that, the fine jumps to $150.

Elsewhere, car owners have been issued vital security advice to keep their vehicles safe after a crime ring hit a major airport.

Around 14 suspects have been linked to the theft of nearly $5 million of vehicles at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas.

Approximately 52 vehicles were stolen at the travel hub between 2023 and November 2024, according to a search warrant obtained by NBC affiliate NBCDFW.
