The Best, Worst and Wildest Moments from the 2025 Golden Globe Awards

Awards season is upon us! The first big show of the year, the Golden Globes, aired Sunday night, and while the awards may all be passed out, we aren't finished talking about everything that happened. The star-studded event, which honored the best of 2024's film and television, passed out awards to Hollywood A-listers while host Nikki Glaser kept the jokes coming. With the SAG Awards, BAFTAs and, of course, the Oscars arriving over the next couple months, all eyes were on this year's first set of major winners.

As expected, the evening included impassioned winner speeches, quippy jokes, and unforgettable red-carpet looks. Of course, there were also plenty of weird, wild and unexpected things that happened as well.

Here's a rundown of all the evening's biggest, most memorable moments:

The best, worst and wildest things that happened at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards

    High: Nikki Glaser's Monologue

It will come as a shock to no one who has seen her roast of Tom Brady, but Nikki Glaser's opening monologue was one of the best in recent memory. The seasoned comedian poked fun at everything from Peacock ("I've seen more actual peacocks than shows on Peacock.") and the Wicked "holding space" meme to Timothée Chalamet's mustache and Martin Short's love of cameras. She didn't shy away from dark subject matter either, making jokes about Sean "Diddy" Combs's "freak offs" and the prevalence of arrests among Hollywood's elite. Perhaps her funniest bit, however, came at the expense of Joker: Folie a Deux, which she skewered and then reminded viewers had received no nominations this year.

In a truly baffling move, the Golden Globes opted to swap out the traditional clip packages during each category's nominee announcement for a strange wide shot of the Beverly Hilton ballroom and arrows pointing to where each nominee was seated. Not only was this useless, uninteresting information, but due to several technical glitches throughout the night, it often didn't even work properly. Praying this is scrapped.

Low: Strange, wordy fun facts written out on the lower third

Another odd addition to the 2025 Golden Globes was the plethora of random facts about nominees, winners and presenters splashed on the bottom of the screen. Do you care what Zoe Saldana's favorite karaoke song is? Did you need to know that Demi Moore is an "avid doll collector"? It is shocking that Hiroyuki Sanada played baseball when he was 8 years old? Welp. Now you know. Or you would if you could speed read the tidbits before they were yanked off the screen.

"My wife and I did a shot of tequila with Mario Lopez. Definitely feeling that. Whole speech is gone. Rip it, Kieran!"—Kieran Culkin accepting his Golden Globe pic.twitter.com/1WvSrxp46c

    — Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) January 6, 2025

    Whoa: Kieran Culkin's acceptance speech

As we learned during Culkin's sweeping of awards for the final season of Succession, he's always good for a kooky acceptance speech. During this year's ceremony, after winning Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, Culkin confessed that he and his wife had just done tequila shots with Mario Lopez and that going to a therapist was "not fine. It's a lot of work." Never change, Kieran.

Nikki Glaser just interrupted her own musical number by saying "wait, this sucks?!" after trying to mash up Wicked and Conclave lol"You...will...be...Pope-ular...I'm embarrassing myself in front of Elton John?!" pic.twitter.com/lAnRKFU5Zd

    — Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) January 6, 2025

Proving her comedic chops yet again, Glaser reappeared for what seemed to be a mid-show musical number, an awards show staple. However in the middle of a Conclave/Wicked spoof to the tune of "Popular," she received a notice in her earpiece telling her the song "sucks." The whole bit poked fun at how cringey awards show musical numbers often are and certainly earned Glaser an invite back next year.

    High: Conclave wins Best Screenplay

This awards season's universal crowd pleaser is the papal thriller Conclave. Making a movie about a bunch of old men locked in a room edge-of-your-seat riveting is quite a feat, and Peter Straughan certainly made it look easy. It seemed likely that one of the flashier, more dramatic films would nab the prize, but the Globes went with the more fun choice.

Low: The producers getting Sofía Vergara and Karla Sofia Gascón mixed up

In a cringey camera mixup during Emilia Perez director Jacques Audiard's speech, he thanked the film's Spanish transgender star Gascón, and the producers instead cut to a shot of Vergara, who is Colombian.

High: Colin Farrell thanks craft services

In the unending onslaught of thanks to producers, agents and studio heads, it's always fun when someone shouts out the lower-level set workers who are pivotal in making a movie. Farrell spent quite a bit of time shouting out craft services and in particular a woman named Carolina, who would bring him coconut water. Cheers to you, Carolina!

Whoa: Seth Rogen and Catherine O'Hara discuss their past in Canadian pornos

In the funniest presenter bit of the night, comedians Seth Rogen and Catherine O'Hara discussed their "work" in Canadian films, including a series of pornographic films that won Rogen "The Beaver."

High: Demi Moore wins her first Golden Globe

In a bit of a surprise upset over both Wicked's Cynthia Erivo and Anora's Mikey Madison, Demi Moore took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for her work in The Substance. This was her first nomination since 1997 and her first major award win. In her speech, she discussed how people told her she was just a "popcorn actress" when she was younger, but she's glad she's proved herself to be a serious actress as well.

My most-used meme of 2025 has arrived.

High: Flow wins Best Animated Feature

In a race against animation juggernauts like Inside Out 2 and Moana 2, it was a wonderful surprise to see the tiny Latvian silent independent film about a cat take home the win. Parade named Flow one of its best 10 films of the year, and this win is highly deserved.

    Challengers earns a Golden Globe

Perhaps I'm biased as a Challengers super fan (see the best of 2024 list above), but I think Challengers should have won about 15 Golden Globes this year. The film's vibrant techno score took home the Best Score trophy and will hopefully inspire you to add it to all your running playlists.

"El Mal" from #EmiliaPerez wins Best Original Song - Motion Picture at the 2025 #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/DjQf1bvKUj

    — The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) January 6, 2025

Whoa: Whatever happened when "El Mal" won

When "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez won the award for Best Original Song, the songwriters Clément Ducol and Camille took to the stage to accept the award. However, in a bout of excitement so did Zoe Saldana, who wanted to present the award to the songwriters. Camille then said several odd things like "songs are butterflies," while Saldana bopped around behind her. Every awards show needs a little chaos.

Vin Diesel to Dwayne Johnson: "Hey, Dwayne." #GoldenGlobes t.co/QUzDz2Lepj pic.twitter.com/0zPIlEUv6m

    — Variety (@Variety) January 6, 2025

In a bit of shade, Vin Diesel, while presenting the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award, started his speech with "Hey, Dwayne." The line was directed at Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who notoriously feuded with Diesel during their work on the Fast and the Furious series. While their beef is supposedly squashed now, the line was certainly a cheeky reference to their infamous rivalry.

High: Awkwafina and Melissa McCarthy as presenters

Another stellar pair of presenters, the two comedians "used their platform" to raise awareness for some important causes associated with the Best TV Comedy nominees. I will never say no to a Cocaine Bear joke.

Low: Three TV shows sweep the awards

As has becoming increasingly common in recent years, the same shows continue to sweep the TV categories. Hacks, Shogun and Baby Reindeer won every TV award they were eligible for with only two exceptions where superstars Jodie Foster and Colin Farrell edged out the Baby Reindeer cast. While the trophies for all three shows are well deserved, it does make for a slightly boring awards show.

Fernanda Torres wins the #GoldenGlobe for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture — drama. t.co/NjoSZaUKEu pic.twitter.com/80gjzalgjZ

    — Variety (@Variety) January 6, 2025

In the biggest upset of the night, Fernanda Torres, the Brazilian star of I'm Still Here, won the trophy for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, edging out Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton and Kate Winslet. Torres hadn't prepared a speech, sure she wouldn't win, but this certainly thrusts her into an already crowded Best Actress Oscars race.

Whoa: "Final cut tiebreak goes to the director"

In his speech following The Brutalist's win in the Best Drama category, Brady Corbet made a plea to producers to let directors make the movies they want to make even if they don't seem commercial to the studio. The Brutalist, which is so long it has a built-in intermission, seemed unsellable on paper, but has become a massive indy hit this year.

Win: Karla Sofía Gascón gives a rousing speech for transgender rights

To conclude the night, the star of Emilia Perez, Karla Sofía Gascón delivered a heartfelt speech about the power of the human spirit, especially the unwavering light of transgender people. As the film won awards all night, it felt only fitting for the trans actress at the movie's center to have a moment to speak. While it seems unlikely that she'll win Best Actress at the Oscars, it was lovely to see her have the chance to speak to the power of transgender representation.
