Sunderland could climb into the automatic promotion spots if they beat relegation-threatened Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light this weekend.
The Black Cats bounced back from their recent defeat at Stoke City by securing a 2-1 home victory against promotion rivals Sheffield United on New Year’s Day to move to within two points of Burnley in second.
Portsmouth, meanwhile, clambered out of the drop zone by kicking off 2025 with a thumping victory over Swansea City in front of the Fratton Park faithful.
