I am not one to root for my rivals. However, when it comes to the Chicago Bears’ search for a new head coach, the most important thing that could happen on Sunday is a Detroit Lions win.
You have no idea how much it pained me to type out that sentence. But hear me out…
Simply put: A Lions win means that the Bears will get an earlier opportunity to interview Detroit’s offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, for their open head coach job. However, a Lions loss alters Johnson’s interview availability. The way I see it, the sooner the Bears can interview Johnson, the better off everyone will be. Get in, check the pulse of the situation, gauge his interest, and see if it is mutual. If it is, great. But if it isn’t, the Bears can move on to other candidates.
© Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesIt is wild to think that while the Bears are (once again) playing for nothing more than pride in Week 18, the result of the Sunday Night Football game between two of their division rivals could influence their search for a new head coach. You’d think that the NFC North championship and No. 1 seed being at stake would be enough. And for some, it is. But for us, the timing of these head coach interviews supersedes any other ramifications that come from the outcome of that game.
Here is what is at stake:
The head coach candidates on the staff of the winner of Sunday’s game will get their interview opportunities quicker than those on the losing side. Assistants on the winning side of the ledger can begin interviewing virtually as soon as Wednesday. Those interviews need to be completed by the end of wild-card weekend. Assistants who are head coach candidates on the losing end of the equation will have to wait until three days *AFTER* their team’s wild-card game ends. Those interviews have to wrap up by the end of the divisional round of playoff games. As you can see, there is a lot at stake for a great many people this weekend. Buckle up, friends.
Ben Johnson isn’t the only potential Bears candidate to watch this weekend
Ben Johnson is the hottest head coaching candidate for the upcoming NFL offseason hiring cycle. Johnson is expected to interview for the Bears job. One NFL insider says the Bears are the “best bet” to land the Lions OC as their next head coach. However, there will be other teams in the mix. It is also worth noting that there are two other coordinators in Sunday’s Lions-Vikings showdown who figure to be persons of interest in Chicago’s head coach search.

For instance, Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn is expected to be on the Bears’ interview wish list. Glenn also figures to receive interest from the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints — a pair of teams he played for during his NFL career. The 52-year-old defensive coordinator coached with New Orleans and was a Bears defensive coordinator candidate in 2021.
There is also Vikings Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores, whose name has popped up as a Bears coaching candidate again. Chicago’s football team had the first confirmed interview with Flores in 2022 and were reportedly “very smitten” with the idea of hiring the former Miami Dolphins head coach. Instead, the team went with Matt Eberflus. Sigh. We all know how that turned out by now. Flores would need to present a compelling plan on how to get the most out of Caleb Williams despite being a defensive-minded head coach. At a minimum, the Bears should let him state his case.
More than two dozen names have been connected by NFL insiders to the Bears head-coaching vacancy. Three of the best candidates happen to be coaching on Sunday. I’m not sure I can call this game a hate-watch when I’ll be monitoring the showdown with an eye on someone who could be the Bears’ next head coach.
